I did my research on motherhood. My research specifically focused on single mothers and the struggles they go through. One of the most important facts I learned was that mothers make significantly less money than a father would. According to the article, mothers make 73 cents to every dollar a father makes. A single mother would have less money to provide for her child than a single father would. Because the mother might have to take a maternity leave to take care of her child, she would be earning even less money because she is not working. At that point, she might not have enough money to pay for the essentials her child needs or to do important household tasks like pay bills. Because of the wage gap that mothers have along with unpaid maternity leave, she is stressed about the money she needs to provide for her family. In the 7 Corporal Works of Mercy, the Mother and Child Education Center clothe the naked. They provide gently used clothing to mothers and their children for free. The Mother and Child Education Center’s work aligns with two different Beatitudes: “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of Heaven” and “Blessed are they who mourn, for they shall be comforted”. Although most people wouldn't lift a finger to help the situation, the work of Caritas, Oasis and the Brotherhood of St. Laurence has a major impact on the lives of these people and although they may come from different denominations, they still work towards a common goal: helping all those in need. For this assignment I interviewed my sister, who is a 48 year-old female that has only 1 child. My sister is a prior member of the armed services. She became a single parent at the age of 27, after her military career. As, she adjusted to the role of motherhood she had to endured several traumatic situations within her personal and professional life but most of all within her parental life. Not having a parent may impact both child and parent adversely. “Children with one parent are at higher risk of delinquency, then, because there is one less person capable of supervision” (Anderson, 576). It seems only logical that a child raised by one parent would have a harder time trying to stay out of trouble. Individual and Contextual Influences on Delinquency: The Role of the Single-parent Family an article written by Amy Anderson focuses on the single-parent family role. The data used to examine this role was taken from an evaluation type of research called the Gang Resistance Education and Training (GREAT). The sample population was 5,935 eighth-grade students, aged thirteen to fifteen from forty-two schools at eleven sites. They used three measures of self-reported delinquency, status, property, and person offenses. The results of this study seemed to be that the specific family structure did not affect weather an adolescent participated in delinquent activity.
Family is a precarious subject. Some people love their families, hate their families, or do not have one at all. In America, we have this ideal picture of what an American family should look like. A mom, a dad, two kids, and a dog. But, we have come to notice the family structure is ever changing and we should just throw the “ideal” picture of a family out of the window. In today’s society there might not always be a father or a mother. Grandparents or a family friend might even raise the kids. It is not who is in your family but what lessons you learn from them. Is a two-parent household, the only household that a child can be adequately raised? Are single mothers the cause of the downward spiral of the youth in the Black society? In the Moynihan report, Daniel Moynihan speculates that the mother headed household is the main cause of problems in the African American community. The Moynihan was not well received by blacks when it was first release. Many felt they it was a racist report drawing biased conclusions about the black community. How could one white man know what exactly is happening in a world far different from his own? His statistics were correct, but he never took the time to reach out to black people to find out what was really going on in their homes. The Family structure has changed significantly in the last fifty years. With higher percentages of marriage ending in divorce, and higher rates of childbearing out of wedlock, single parent families are increasing rapidly. “Seventy percent of all the children will spend all or part of their lives in a single-parent household.” (Dowd) Studies have shown that the children of these families are affected dramatically, both negatively and positively. Women head the majority of single- parent families and as a result, children experience many social problems from growing up without a father. Some of these problems include lack of financial support, and various emotional problems by not having a father around, which may contribute to problems later in life. At the same time, children of single-parent homes become more independent because they learn to take care of themselves, and rely on others to do things for them.
In today’s society many grow up in a single parent household and it may effect some different than other’s. For instance you can look at the percentage of race and how it affects each. For one can look at a black family and see the effects it has on them. Black families are in the high percentage range of growing up in a single parent home. The outcome has little effect on than that of a white family. Not all black families are single parent homes, but the ones that are may be due to parent killed, in prison, or just do not know who their father’s. To compare to a white family growing up in a single parent house can have a higher effect. White families may experience being in a single parent household due to parents getting divorced or death.

A study conducted by Shelley Correll, Stephen Benard, and In Paik found that mothers were 79% less likely to be hired, 50% less likely to be promoted, and offered $11,000 less in salary than identical women without children. In the study, the subjects revealed that they assumed the mothers to be inherently less competent and less committed (Williams and Cuddy 96). Given these statistics, discrimination against mothers is one of the strongest forms of gender bias. The wage gap between men and women is widely recognized, however there also exists a gap between mothers and women without children.
Is being a single mother a the most inspiring, difficult, demanding, and rewarding job in the that a person can have? I always looked up to my mother as a loving and caring inspiration to me and others who she came in contact with. Even though I always looked at my mother as a role model she is not perfect, I watched her make mistakes such as abusing prescription medication she received due to an injury, spend money irresponsibly, and procrastinate time and time again.
