1. We have many different stem cells in our bodies that we carry throughout our entire life. Embryonic stem cells exclusively, possess an immense self-renewal capacity to differentiate into essentially any cell type of organism. The potential for cures from Embryonic Stem Cells are limitless; they have the potential to be able to treat, diabetes, Alzheimer’s disease, heart failure, spinal cord injury, and bone marrow failure, to name just a few. These breakthroughs will open the doors for scientist to study even more stem cell types through the embryonic cells, which will lead to great discoveries and remarkable cures, possibly even for chronic diseases.

Many people have mixed feelings when it comes to Embryonic Stem Cells since it involves destruction of human embryos. It forces us to choose between the principles of either alleviating the suffering, or respecting life. To derive an Embryonic Stem Cell, the early embryo has to be destroyed. The ethical concerns come from whether you view the early embryo as possessing the status of a person. Everything depends on how you view the embryo itself; everyone varies in opinion on when an embryo obtains the status of a person. Many believe that immediately after fertilization an embryo becomes a human being, and therefore, should be treated with respect. Opponents of Embryonic Stem Cell research will see it immoral and unethical to destroy one life to save another’s. People in favor of stem cell research see the embryo as a potential person, and consider that since it has not been implanted in the uterus it does not contain human life, and therefore, should be used to benefit patients who are indeed human. For many of those in favor of using fetal tissue for research it has too much "potential" in the future of medicine in terms of providing cures for diseases and "". Over the past decade scientist and the U.S government have been debating about funds for stem cell research (SCR), the amount spent depends on who is in office. The Democratic Party fully supports SCR, but the Republican Party somewhat opposes the concept of SCR, arfuing it violates the Christian principle of life. There are three types of stem cells. Embryonic stem cells which are taken from a fertilized egg, somatic stem cells are fully matured cells taken from an adult, and the more recently founded pluripotent stem cells which are those that can be induced through experimentation to take on specific functions (NIH, 2013).
While many support embryonic stem cell research, some people oppose it say that it is an unethical practice. According to these people, embryonic stem cells require murdering a baby, human life is defined by rational beings, those capable of rational thought or a consciousness. In order to be rational one must have a consciousness, the ability to have thoughts and feel pain, to begin with. “For a fertilized egg, there is no consciousness and also no history of consciousness” (Stem). The final argument against embryonic stem cell research is that there are alternatives, like adult stem cells. While adult stem cells may be utilized, they won’t be as effective. Embryonic stem cells are not only efficient but also renewable. They can be grown in a culture where as adult stem cells are extremely rare, if there are any. They can only be found in mature tissue. Stem cells are the body's raw materials. Specifically, they are cells from which all other cells with specialized functions are generated. At the ethical heart of the matter is a question about using a human fetus for scientific (read "medical") research. For significant research to happen, the fetus must be "alive." After the research has begun (meaning removal of stem cells), the fetus is "dead." Thus, while there has been scientific research on human beings as long as anyone can remember, this research arguably leads directly to the death of the human involved. In many respects, the ethical issues are the same as those discussed for abortion; though, in this case, the living fetus involved may be created by the scientist himself/herself by fertilizing reserved human eggs with human sperm. However the fetus has been created, the ethical issue centers upon the question of whether a human fetus is a human being and is, thus, covered by the principle of not taking human life.
Stem cells come from adult stem cells, and embryonic cells. Embryonic (blastocyst) stem cells come from embryos that are usually three to five days old. They contain 150 cells that are useable for stem cell research. These embryos are usually created as in vitro fertilization (a bunch of eggs that are fertilized but only one is put inside of a woman). Reproduction happens when a male’s sperm is fertilized in a woman’s egg to create a zygote (cell). Scientists can verify the cells are embryonic by them being able to be duplicated and the cells ability to become other cell types; this makes embryonic cells flexible. Adult stem cells are found in adult tissues in very small numbers. These cells are only used in certain areas where they are found such as bone marrow or adipose tissue (fat).
Stem cell research should be allowed on adults but not on humans. Only allowed on humans who are willing to be a part of the stem cell research but no one should be used against their own will. Embryos should not be used for embryonic stem cell research. An embryo being used for their stem cells and then discarded devalues that human life.
