From the beginnings of time, people have wondered: what is it like in space? What are the planets like? Astronomy will tell us. I have always liked astronomy. Stargazing is one thing I love doing. It is always rewarding to identify craters of the Moon or point out a faint constellation. That is why I decided to research astronomy. I decided on the question, “How might we colonize Mars?” I decided to research how we might colonize Mars. I picked this question because the prospect of colonizing planets is something I know little about. Although it is only being thought about, researched, and designed, there are many ideas out there. These include a space ship, food, water, hygiene, and music. A space ship is necessary because you need something to protect you from the cold vacuum of space. Without a space ship, whether just your suit or a vehicle, you can only survive 15 seconds. Also, a space ship will clean waste water and air, as well as remove flammable gases like methane from the ship. Food and water are both very important for survival. We need them even on Earth. Water, besides being consumed, is used to keep clean and as an additive for dehydrated foods. Food is also necessary, because it gives us energy. However, food on a space shuttle must be light. So, it is either dehydrated, temperature-stabilized, irradiated, or eaten natural form (if it is a fresh fruit of vegetable). It cannot include foods that crumble, like bread. These might clog machinery.
Hygiene is always important. In space, astronauts use soap and shampoo that work without water, in order to use less water. Also, astronauts have a toothbrush and toothpaste. Then they don't have need to see a dentist while in space. Exercise is also very important, because gravity doesn't pull on bones and muscles in space. They will use growth labs to provide food. Also humans will search for signs of life. Sterilized robots will go to certain areas to search for signs of life. They must be sterilized so that any organisms from Earth will not interfere with the results. Also, humans will not go to these places so that organisms on them will not hamper results.
Once a colony is established, Buzz Aldrin proposed that they use an Aldrin Cycler to travel between the two planets. The Aldrin Cycler would orbit the sun, and carry passengers to Mars and back. It would fly by Earth and Mars in its 2 1/7 year orbit around the sun. It would not stop, a space taxi would be necessary to board it. The Aldrin Cycler would take less than six months to reach Mars, but then take 20 months to return to Earth. This means that there would likely be a Cycler that would go the opposite direction.

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has made countless brand new inventions in order to help the astronauts up in space over the years. They needed to make these new things so they could do the same things they would do here on earth but without gravity and many other differences. Over the years a lot of things we use in our everyday lives were originally made for people in space but actually ended up benefiting people on earth as well! These accidental inventions are also called spinoffs. Today i will only talk about three of these things which include water purification, enriched baby formula, and even memory foam!
The Martian Chronicles is a collection of short stories by Ray Bradbury These stories all relate to the idea of humans visiting mars, but are only connected by the loosest of threads. At times, it can appear as if Bradbury was grasping mercilessly, searching for something to draw together the random conglomeration of human situations his mind had created individually. The entity that embraced all these stories and melded them from half-hour kiddy-show format stories into a great two-hour special feature novel was the forth planet from the sun, earth's neighbor and Bradbury's stage for The Martian Chronicles, mars.
In my Genius Hour Project, I researched long-term colonization of Mars. I chose this topic because I have always been fascinated by other planets and space. What we cannot see has always made me wonder. I pursued my interests in this project. I set a goal to learn about Mars. This experience has made me much more knowledgeable and curious about other planets.
The world we live in continues to diminish, from global warming and natural disasters to disease and poverty. Therefore, space exploration is vital in order to discover new ways to save our planet, while looking into other possibilities for our future as human beings.
As a country we need to start investing more money and research into space technology. Programs currently exist for this effort, but the potential for research and progress is limited by a lack of funding; compared to other government funded programs, aerospace funding is pitiful. Continued research in space technology is a necessary step in our growth and development not just as a country but also as entire human race. If we are to achieve this goal, it is necessary to increase funding for space research and technology and consider the possibility of colonizing outer space. If we limit our existence to the planet Earth, and continue to drain the resources on this planet, we will destroy the only home we have.

Since mankind’s beginning, it has always felt the need to explore beyond farther than it has already explored; whether it be the crossing of the Atlantic to the New World or the exploration of the land acquired through the Louisiana Purchase, humans have always felt the need to explore and study what they do not know (SV;SV). The recent events regarding the NASA Mars probes have renewed the debate of reinstalling manned space missions with the objectives of exploring and landing on foreign worlds such as the moon and the red planet Mars, rather than the use of solely robotic craft and machines. It is my belief that we should return to the days of Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin, those of manned lunar landings and manned space exploration. Robots simply cannot and should not be allowed to be the sole means of visiting these worlds, nor should humans only be able to witness new findings second hand through the use of computers and machines. It is human nature to be normally curious of one’s surroundings, and it is important that we send one of our own to new worlds. The effects that past missions have had on the world’s people, as well as our political and cultural climates are another valid reason for flesh instead of metal to lay claim to space. Also, the limitless applications and new education that manned flights can bring to us from on site human interactions could lead to another technological and industrial revolution like the original lunar programs had done for us during the Gemini and Apollo programs.
Although it seems as if we have enough problems that need to be solved on earth, we still need to invest our time and money into space exploration. Whether it's the inventions that help us right now, or ways we will benefit in the future, the price of space exploration is worth it. Humans can expect to face some major challenges on an expedition to Mars. It has been proven that humanity can travel in space for over two years. Cumulatively, Sergei Constantinovich Krikalev, a Russian cosmonaut, has spent over eight-hundred and three days in Earth orbit (Lyndon B. Johnson Space Center, 2005). The expedition to Mars would require the crew to endure a six month journey to the planet, a year of living on the planet, and a six months journey back to Earth. Russian cosmonaut, Valery V. Polyakoz, clocking in at four-hundred and thirty-eight days for just one stay in Earth orbit, shows humanity is capable of a twelve month round trip to Mars (Schwirtz, 2009).
Space has always been a pivotal and utmost important subject for many years. In the past, scientists have made monumental advances in this field such as sending people into orbit and landing a man on the moon. Of course, this has only barely been explored and we still have a lot more to see of the ever-vast outer space. Presently, people are paying Virgin Galactic $250,000 to reserve a seat on a spaceship that is expected to tour suborbital space in the near future (Virgin Galactic). Although space travel continues to be of interest, there is also some controversy. Controversies include: the allocation of government resources for space exploration, government verses commercial spacecrafts, and the need to colonize other planets for the survival of humanity. The intrigue and the controversy of space travel are the reasons for this Astronomy conversation.
