Should playing video games be considered a sport? Many people think it should not since it requires little to no physical movement, this is usually the opinion of those who don’t play. I believe playing video games should be considered a sport as there are even professionals in the field. The world of e-sports is a very niche subject as allot of people don’t even know it exists. Many conventions are dedicated to it and there are even championships held in different parts of the world for certain games. To understand how much dedication and hard work it takes to be a good player really takes an open mind. This is true as really the only thing you need is a flexible wrist, a mouse and a keyboard. With just that list you could be the world champion in LOMA (lord management) and RTS (real time strategy) games such as the very popular League of Legends and Dota 2. Sports typically require a rather large amount of physical energy while gaming requires little of the body and more of the mind. How about all the other things that come heavily into gaming and “real” sports, things such as: Strategy, focus, patience, teamwork, discipline, and even endurance in some respects. Endurance of the mind, to sit and focus on a monitor displaying bright colors and a hard to follow battle of wits, reflexes, and pixelated weapons that become all too real when one should suffer a loss. The mind is part of the body, it is physical, it is classified as an organ but in many respects behaves as a muscle, one that must be trained just as much as any other. Just as a football stars wake up and trains for their up and coming game, gamers all over the world come together and take up their own training, with the mouse they pick up their heavy steel sword and with their keyboard they train stellar reflexes to avoid fatal blows in battle. In an article written by Vlad Savov for The Verge it is said “The life of a pro gamer requires uncommon discipline and perseverance, because the obstacles to success are as numerous outside the game as they are fearsome inside it.” He looked into the lives of real pro gamers and still came to this conclusion. I agree with him, true gamers must have discipline to play, and perseverance to get back up when they lose. Discipline?
