Although it may be tempting as a parent to give your child your phone to entertain or quiet them down at a restaurant, waiting in line at the grocery store, or even church, there are many consequences that can factor in. “In a communication age, we are in danger of raising a generation speaking and listening less” (Hunt). Children today are becoming less social and undisciplined because they are used to getting their way when their parents hand them their phone. Due to the adverse effects, technology should not be used as a babysitter. Today, because of technology, kids and even adults are losing the ability to socialize face to face. Technology is not just damaging the creative aspect of children, but also the brain development. Some argue that it is necessary for children to be around technology at a young age; it is the future and they should have a head start in learning how to use it. It is interesting to find that “Almost half of the top 100-selling iPhone apps are for preschool or elementary-aged children”(Goldberg). The world encourages it, there is an abundance of child friendly cases and accessories meant for phones and ipads. Parents and children are giving into the marketing schemes of device accessories. Because the devices are more child friendly, their usage time is growing, resulting in a more distracted generation. “A Pew Internet survey of nearly 2,500 teachers finds that 87% believe new technologies are creating an “easily distracted generation with short attention spans” and 64% say today’s digital technologies “do more to distract students than to help them academically”” (Graber).
