Should Schools Ban Homework? (Essay 3 Counter Argument Essay)
Should schools ban homework? Homework has forced families to follow the states educational agenda and families never have time to enjoy their lives at home with their children after school. Research around the world has shown that students that are assigned homework on a day-to-day basis have a much more stressful life. Children now a day worry more about getting their homework turned in on time instead of being able to play outside or have a balanced schedule with extra-curricular activities at school. People all around the world and in the United States are beginning ban homework and create No-homework policies after seeing how difficult homework is starting to be for students. Students are working on homework more often instead of being in clubs and sports, because they are scared of not being able to complete their assignments if they join extra curricular activities. This might be true but it doesn’t address the whole issue. Some people feel that homework should be given because it improves learning; however, there are educational ways other than homework in order for students to succeed.

Homework is a way to add more stress to students and make them obtain lower scores on tests and assignments at school. In the article, “It’s All About Education: Should Schools Ban Homework?” Lee gives a fact about Finland’s homework situation, “ you should know that there is little to no homework assigned in Finland, where high school graduation rates far exceed the United States’, test scores are some of the best in the world, and two-thirds of the high school graduates go on to college.”
The variety of harmful affects stemming from homework in any amount prove it must be banned in all grades, K-12, to save our school system. Banning homework deserves first priority in our educational system. School systems across the country have already begun to catch on, though homework remains a wide-ranging problem. Together, our country can end homework for all kids and drastically improve the quality of American education, giving them a better education to thrive in the fast-growing world of the 21st century. To give children this opportunity, homework must be banned.
Everytime a kid does his homework, correctly, they are possibly advancing their knowledge and understanding of the subject at hand. Although, Alfie Kohn, author of the book “The Homework Myth” states, “Such policies sacrifice thoughtful instruction in order to achieve predictability, and they manage to do a disservice not only to students but, when imposed from above, to teachers as well” (Suhay). Not all homework will be beneficial. It can harm
“The typical student, even in high school does not spend more than an hour per day on homework” (Loveless NP). However, there is an ongoing dispute between critics on whether a lot of homework has more negative effects than positive effects, and vice versa. Homework is the greatest tool for student success, whether they realize it or not, homework is the key to success, it may not be to fun, but it has many positive effects. Homework improves academic success, it develops non-school skills, and it helps involve parents.
Homework has been an integral part of education since children started to be educated. Recently however, homework has begun to be assigned more and more often to students, especially in the United States, as it has begun to fall further and further behind countries like China, Singapore, and Japan. Homework is anything assigned by teachers to be completed by the students either at home, or just on their own time. The workload for students has gotten to the point where more and more parents are starting to notice the load for their kids has gotten to be too much. Many kids in high school, even 9th and 10th graders, can have 3 or even 4 hours of homework every night. In the past couple years, homework has gotten so out of control that parents are starting to speak out, and protest the amount of homework that students get each night (Marzano). In addition, studies have been done to determine the value of homework, but overall, the results are mixed at best (Kohn). Even studies that show a positive relationship between homework and test scores, among other things, show that homework is only effective when assigned in a moderate amount. Too much homework can be counter-productive, or have adverse effects on students. Students with too much homework can perform worse on tests, and develop serious physical and mental health problems from too much stress or lack of sleep.
I think we should not have homework. Whenever teachers over do it with home work Kids end up sleeping late and can’t focus the next day. One reason why students shouldn’t have homework is because at home students struggle with the work and don’t know how to do it. Students should only have class work because if they are having a hard time doing it they have a teacher there to help them.
Homework isn’t that hard, it’s just too much and there isn’t a lot that has any meaning. So, I think that homework is just a piece of paper that so many people work on just to get one single grade in that barely does anything to your overall grade, it should be a voluntary/ extra credit and practice kind of thing, which basically means kids and teens should have a choice whether or not they want to do it or not and if they choose not to and fail it’s their own fault.
Doing too much homework is not help students to become scholars. However, too little homework will make the students fall behind their peers. Some people have found a good amount of homework so that the students would become better at schools and home. Still, many people think that homework isn’t helpful. Do you think schools should get rid of homework?
I barely get any sleep because I have so much homework. Homework should be banned because people have activities after school, then they go home to clean and then do homework by that time it would be late. Although people think that homework is a good practice for education, homework should be banned because it can can cause people to be tired in the morning after staying up doing homework.
Normally people would like to go home from a hard day of work at school and relax. And everyday is like that. At school all you do is work. People don’t want to come home just to do more work. Should homework really be allowed?
The fact that the amount of homework has risen 3 or 4 times over the past decades shows that homework isn’t brain-stimulating, but exhausting. With this in mind, we can evaluate that longer hours also lead to bad grades, a reduction in self confidence, weakened social skills, and other qualities of life (CNN). These serious allegations all show that homework is not beneficial, but in fact,
She gets home at 3:12 p.m on a Friday, she makes a plan that she will get all her homework done before Saturday so she has the whole weekend to binge watch her favorite show on Netflix. Fast-forward to Sunday night; after binge-watching her favorite show she realizes she has not even started her homework. Does that sound familiar? Or, he gets home after a long day at school and is ready for his football game. He decided he will get all his homework done before the game.
In conclusion, homework is a waste of time. Time that can be better spent is with family and having fun participating in extracurricular activities. Eliminating homework allows students the reward of free time and the invaluable time spent with family. Homework creates unnecessary stress and strain for parents and students alike. Also, homework allows teachers to pawn off their own teaching responsibilities to students and parents with hours of homework. Homework is not beneficial and it should be banned for students Kindergarten thru 8th grade.
The United States of America has many states that have their students take homework home to work on, not a single school doesn’t send kids to school without homework. They are two sides on to why students should have homework and even more and the side that thinks that students should have none. I personally think that we shouldn’t have homework at all. One of the main reason to why I think that school should hold back on homework is because of sports. Why I think that it has an influence on the people that do sports is because it take time from them to rest up and get heeled properly.
Harris Cooper, a researcher on homework from Duke University, claims that too much homework causes stress. In this I paper will talk about the damaging effects homework has on a child, how homework causes students to dropout of school, and some ideas for an alternative to homework.
We all know the downfall of homework: the frustration and exhaustion, family conflict, time loss, and decreasing interest in learning. No study has ever demonstrated any academic achievement linked to assigning homework. There is also no support to the fact that homework provides nonacademic benefits at any age. Here are a few examples: building character, promoting self-discipline, or teaching good work habits. All teachers who assign homework want to believe that the gain outweighs the pain. Although, there is no evidence of that and they must rely on faith (“Homework: No Proven Benefits”, pg. 1). Michellea, a mother of a middle school student, says that some work can reinforce certain skills, but hours of homework are unhealthy and unproductive. Mominseattle agrees. She contemplates that such a heavy load can result in potential drawbacks to the students. Hours of homework a night plus a full day of school can be just as much work as an adult at a full-time job. She believes students should enjoy their childhood, as short as it already is. MagnetMom complains about how her daughter’s homework takes away her beneficial sleep. With busy families, like hers, they have many after school activities, so when they get home, they do not have time for too much homework. She says ...
