In the 1980’s, the trend reversed greatly, most likely due to the concern about AIDS, which unequally affecting gay and bisexual men. During 1986 only “32% supported legalizing homosexual relations, whereas 57% opposed it” (Herek “Sexual” 2013).

The Mentality That Made Discrimination
In short, the majority of the past in the United States has been a discriminatory and waffling effect on the opinions of the homosexual community stemming from bias and informational social influence or social proof. Psychology Behind Prejudice of Homosexuals
Between two functions and three attitudes, it is easier to decide what is creating the prejudice behind the homosexual community and the psychology that helps decipher this prejudice.
The functional approach is the assumption that people express certain attitudes towards others because they benefit psychologically from these attitudes and assumptions (Herek “Sexual” 2013). Another assumption of the functional approach is that individuals ' attitudes are affected by the situation they are put in. Different situations make different psychological needs arise, which can affect attitude, making it functional or not in the situation (Herek “Sexual” 2013).
A functional perspective assumes that heterosexuals have different motivations for their attitudes toward homosexuality (Herek “Sexual” 2013)....

The LGBT community, according to a report by the Institute of Medicine in 2011 says that people who identify as LGBT have issues gaining access to health care, as well as worse mental and physical health based upon less studied minority stressors causing poor mental health which in turn takes a toll on overall health. Not only that but they are more likely to report having symptoms such as anxiety, depressions, and alcohol or drug abuse (Gonzales). Due to the fact that the LGBT community is more likely to be looked down upon, they face more health issues with less of an ability to get help. By providing a more comforting and less discriminatory environment by ensuring that heterosexuals and homosexuals will live cohesively together, the thought of a gap in the medical field between the two sexualities will eventually fade out.
