The U.S. Military - Should Everyone Serve? The debate over whether military service should be a requirement or not has been raging on for many years. For one, those on the requirement side states “It is your country and your freedoms, so why would you not fight for those rights?” On the other hand, the opposition states “We are all different, and military service isn’t in the best interest of some people.” Although both sides have a decent point, the ladder option seems like the best choice. The main points for why this is are because it is irrational to send a person out to war who is not fit to/does not want to, it will render the military inefficient, and the system would be too difficult to implement (due to the numerous number of dissents …show more content…

They could send out those who don’t want to serve, but rather aid in other jobs, such as curing diseases, engineering the technology of the future, or even furthering war efforts from the labs. According to the article “Serving is not for Everyone” by Jacey Eckhart at Military.com, “...the economic theory called comparative advantage says that it is not very efficient to take on every task you are capable of doing. Instead, you are supposed to specialize in the tasks you are relatively better at compared to other tasks.” What this means is that you can attempt to do everything that you are possibly capable of doing, however it creates inefficiency. The ideal way to carry out tasks is to choose what you are best at and get better at it. Of course, as everyone has different tasks, goals, and specialties, combat may not be one of them. This makes the idea a waste of time for those who do not need the training and have differing paths other than the one paved by the concept of requiring military service. On the other hand, the other side claims that freedoms are a privilege, not a right and that we need to fight for the privileges and opportunities presented to us. This is certainly not true, as all the people in this country contribute for the privileges given in their own unique ways, and do not have to involve military …show more content…

Some are not cut out for the strict orders, the positions in the military, or the difficult and harsh training involved for each position. The quantity of soldiers available may increase, but the quality certainly will decrease. You are only as strong as your weakest link, so the fact that it can cost an unnecessary life or even a war in times of crisis makes it a bad idea. According to “10 Meaningful Pros and Cons of Mandatory Military Service” on connectusfund.org, it states that mandatory military service “...could lead to high casualty rate among soldiers drafted under compulsory military service.” This makes the major risk that comes along with mandatory military service not worth the minimal reward. Of course, there is always the point that it increases availability of soldiers. However, quality does not always equate to quality, and it could actually hold the entire team down due to the extra unnecessary
