I decided to write my paper using the essay “Should Everyone Go to College” written by Stephanie Owen and Isabel Sawhill. This essay talks heavily about the differences between a bachelor’s degree and a high school diploma. When considering what a person wants to do for the rest of his life, the first option he might consider is whether he needs to go to college to do so. Though people may think college is not for them, a college may be more than they think. The higher the college degree, someone earns, the bigger chance he has to make more money.
According to the authors of “Should Everyone Go to College?”. “23- to 25-year-olds with bachelor’s degrees make $12,000 more than high school graduates, but by age 50, the gap has grown to $46,500”. Now most Americans believe that people should try to make as much money as they can during their lifetimes. It is what Americans call the “American Dream.” Why not increase one’s wealth of knowledge and dollars? Education is so important in today's society. Many of the jobs for which people apply need some education after high school. Those are the jobs that are paying more money. Since these jobs are paying more, these employers want educated, well-spoken, and honest employees. Attending college can teach people so many skills and open so many doors for young people. The vast majority of jobs in America require only vocational training or a skill certificate. People who do not have the aptitude for college should not be forced into thinking college is the only way to be successful in life. Society should encourage students to explore all job options not just the college related ones, because with the way times are changing getting trained from a vocational school is the best option America’s citizens have.
A high school education is no longer sufficient to succeed in America’s increasingly complex economy. However, because of the high price point of a college education, far too many Americans are unable to afford education beyond high school. As shown in the graph below, the higher level of education received greatly increases the chances for employment and also dramatically increases the average salary potential of an individual.

In the article “Are too many People Going to College” by Charles Murray a W. H. Brady Scholar at the American Enterprise Institute, argues that our educational system needs improvement and that too many people are attending college. Some of Charles arguments on why too many people are attending college are obtaining a Bachelor’s Degree gives you a high paying job, college requires classes that are unnecessary, skill/talent may not need a degree and because they do not want to be labeled as dumb or lazy. Charles Murray makes a lot of good arguments on why too many people are going to college and I concur with his arguments.

The work load outside of the classroom could be compared to working a full time job. For example, if a student is enrolled in four college courses and is in class a minimum of four hours the student should spend at least four to six hours of studying. When I began my senior year, the number one thing which people asked me was where I was going to college. Whether they actually knew me or not, that would be the first thing they asked once they found out I was in the final stretch of my high school career. Now, I obviously had a pre-planned answer for them, since I had answered the question so many times, but I always found it to be peculiar that people didn’t actually care at all about what I was going to do with my life; they just wanted to know where I was going to get my expensive piece of paper from.
