Hello everyone, thank you all for coming. I am here today to talk about the removal of a number of sharks from the wild. As West Australians you would be aware of the increasing number of fatal shark attacks in our state. In 2015 alone we had five deaths and this year already 3 divers and surfers have lost their lives in shark attacks- these are individual and community-wide tragedies! Whilst a number of initiatives have been discussed and or trialed by our government we need to find an effective solution to prevent further deaths. I am here today to explain to you why I support the removal of sharks within 3 kilometers of popular beaches.

Great white sharks average at 4½m in length, but some have been recorded as large as 6m long. One of the biggest great whites ever caught in the world was 6.4 metres in 1987 at Ledge Point Western Australia. Great whites generally weigh up to 2,250 kg and can live up to 70 years. According to National Geographic, “Great white sharks can detect one drop of blood in 100 liters of water and can sense a few drops of blood up to 5 km away”. One of the biggest great whites ever caught in the world was 6.4 meters in 1987 at Ledge Point. This location is just 20 kilometers south of a great white shark attack on the 14th of July 2012 that took the life of surfer Ben Linden. On the 28th of August 2012, 34 year old surfer Jon Hines was attacked at Red Bluff, which is a bit north of Carnarvon. He suffered serious injuries and required over 1000 stitches. Also, I would rather see the government remove sharks with professional fishermen and in a quiet fashion rather than the thought of having inexperienced or game fishermen hunt these animals for
