In a single person’s lifetime, it is almost impossible to avoid advertisements completely. Scrolling through twitter or facebook, watching tv, or even picking up your mail at the end of the day will expose you, and the people around you to advertisements. Although many people will not realize the harm done by these ads it is a very serious issue throughout the world. Advertisements use sexualized and objectified images of women which have a major effect on society today.

Scott’s bar. F. Scott’s bar is located in Washington DC and they produced a rather controversial ad. Their ad stated that “if your date won’t listen to reason, try a velvet hammer.” This ad encouraged viewers to use alcohol as an alternative to consent. It’s because of ads like these that woman are in a somewhat state of terror (Kilbourne 499). The question up for debate with these various sexual ads is why are they even produced? Someone must find them appealing in some way if they are used this often. Maybe these ads are designed just to get the viewers attention, by shocking them and using their unconscious anxiety. It could even be designed just to play into many men and women’s fantasies. Sometimes these fantasies create an illusion that the viewer is still in control (Kilbourne 497). Since most people are well connected with smartphones and internet access there is a great amount of people that are conscious and unconsciously affected by the sex in many advertisements. In advertisements and in life, men are taught that sex is more important than emotional connections and that violence is encouraged, although not bluntly. Men learn throughout their lifetime that they are meant to be forceful and dominant (Kilbourne 489). Over time there have been several studies detailing how “young women described intricate ways they stayed alerted, limited their access to the world, took precautions, and essentially thought about rape all the time” (Solnit 527). This “fear of violence limits most women in ways they've gotten so used to they hardly notice” (Solnit 527). In reality, this fear instilled within women is not very unheard of because “one in five women will be raped in her lifetime” (Solnit 522). This issue doesn't end at women, it extends to men also.
