Sexual content on television is a bad idea. Teenagers watch on average of three hours of television that contains sexual scenes. Having early sexual initiation is a very important social and health issue. The 90th percentile of television sex viewing has had a predictable probability of intercourse initiation was approximately doubled from the youths in the 10th percentile. Young teens could possibly get pregnant and get sexually transmitted diseases. Sexual talk on television has a major effect on children at an earlier age. Sexual content on television effects juveniles and can have a negative influence on them when they are at a young age.

Parents would not have to talk to their children about having sex because television shows them how to use protection, however, younger children may start having sex at an earlier age. Children will know how to use protection while having sex, so it will decrease teen pregnancy. With easy access to the television shows and the films, young children can access and search for anything for which they may have questions. Many people find themselves thinking “what did they just say” or “That is so inappropriate” when watching TV. Especially when watching shows on MTV. There’s a controversy about whether shows on MTV such as “16 and Pregnant”, “Teen Mom”, and “Jersey Shore” glamorize or prevent destructive behaviors in teens.

The entertainment that television is now portraying is not exactly what the younger society of America needs to be exposed to, but unfortunately in today's economy, that is the only kind of entertainment that sells. There is so much unnecessary exposure to violence, aggressive behavior, and sexual acts now being broadcasted daily on television, movies, music, and even the news. The broadcasting system is now targeting younger children and teens. Crime rates have skyrocketed due to delinquent juvenile behavior over the past ten years. The whole viewing society is now becoming very tolerant and at ease with sexuality and violence.
They all agree that media has certain impacts on adolescent attitudes and behaviors, however, they express more concerns about how much adolescents are actually aware of this. In order to prove this, they asked a group of people coming from the urban and rural communities of Southwest Michigan to participate in interviews and discussion about adolescent sexual behaviors. These participants were divided in groups with young girls, boys, their mothers and fathers, “The average age was 15 for girls and 16 for boys. Parents’ ages ranged from 41 to 51 with the average age being 46 for mothers and 48 for fathers.” They were asked to rank and discuss the influential factors such as parents, peers and media. The purpose of this experiment is to identify the extent of how adolescents and their parents think about media’s influence without being prompted. The results from groups were compared and surprisingly, the adolescents did not seem to think that media has such huge impact on their sexual behaviors, which was opposite to what their parents believed as they showed significant concerns about how media influences their children. Today, I believe that children are being sexualized earlier and earlier, mostly in light of the fact that they are being presented to sexual material in videos, music and different sorts of media. I think that early exposure to sexually graphic material is likely to have a negative influence and a potentially dangerous impact on children under the age of 18. Although young children do not understand sex or its function in relationships, the images they see can leave a lifelong influence on their lives.

The media is a large part of our everyday lives; everywhere we go we can find a source of media. It influences our thoughts, feelings and behaviours every day as it is a huge influence in today’s society. Society heavily relies on the media to show them what is in the norm and what is going on in the world. The media also serves as another way to display the normative of the society. Sexuality is a big part in the media and what is appropriate sexuality. The media negatively affects the people who do not fit society’s ideal normative. This includes people with a sexuality that is not the normative of heterosexuality. In the media, these people of other sexualities are excluded and made to feel they do not fit into society. My pyramid shows how society classifies people by their sexuality in the media. This involves highlighting the normative sexuality and excluded any other sexuality from the mainstream media.
A statistic from the same research shows that in the typical television show there are more than three sexual related scenes per hour. As it is said in the introduction of the report the average teenager is spending more than twenty hours per week in watching television (Nielsen, 1998), so this is why television programs are influencing mostly on younger viewers.
The media has changed significantly over the past decades. Technology has modified our abilities to expand our communication network, and it allows companies to spread their commercials over many different continents. Research done by Roberts (1993) shows that adolescent and children are often very influenced by media that involves sexual or violent conduct. This research is based on media involving children and adolescents, however this does not eliminate the effect media has on adults (Singer & Singer, 2001, p. 269).
Research Questions and/or Hypotheses The research question and basis of the study can be summarized as whether or not the exposure to sexual concepts through the media have significant influences on the sexual practices of teenagers. Similarly, it is proposed that, if proven to be accurate, media can be used in similar formats to encourage safe sex and preventative sexual health practices. The use of focus groups, journal writings, room tours, and interviews allowed teens the opportunity to discuss sexuality which was operationalized as teen views on love, sex, and relationships. Young people especially the teenagers are sensitive and receptive to learning new things. The media provides more than they can handle. Access to different programs, shows, and movies affect the manner that the teenagers behave. Today, it is unfortunate to say that the media is becoming more sexual and violent than the older days, resulting in similar behaviors among the teens (Craig, & Baucum, 2001). By watching programs intended for the adults, teenagers are drifting even further. They start behaving like adults without the prerequisites of becoming one. This means that they have contents that do not match with their ages. And then terrible things begin – increased college dropouts, teenage pregnancies, and increased cases of suicides. Sexually active youths tend to be more exposure to media than any other members of society. The reason behind that is because they are in charge of their own time without much interference from their parents and burdensome responsibilities. This, combined with the fact that both implicit and explicit sexual content and crime in the mass media has grown over time predisposes youths to premarital sex (Rosengren, 2000).
Sexual activity in the mass media is another negative influence on teenagers. The first example is early sexual intercourse. According to Stockwell, a research shows that teenagers who are exposed to a lot of sexual content on television are more to likely to have sex by 16 years of age than those with limited exposure.
