When you think about animals and humans, what do you think about? Animals have been a part of the human society for many of years. Nevertheless, the earliest use of companion in the united states occurred from 1944 to 1945 at an army air corps convalescent hospital at Pawling, New York. The use of pets in the medical setting dates back more than 150 years, says Aubrey Fine, a clinical psychologist and professor at California state polytechnic university. Therefore, service animals are animals that have been trained to perform tasks that assist people with disabilities. The animal role in today’s society has grown over the years. Mental illness affects one and four adults in a year. This is one of the reasons why emotional support animals are starting to be used in the mental illness community. One review involving children with autism spectrum disorder suggested that trained service animals can help facilitate daily routines, encourage social interactions and reduce behavioral outburst in these children. A growing amount of research has proven that animals can make us healthy or healthier. Animals also can help with patients who have physical disabilities such as companionship, reduce loneliness and help the patients feel needed and important. There are many of animal who help with physical therapy. For example, a horse provides therapeutic riding. This is used for a person with cerebral palsy, muscular dystrophy, multiple sclerosis, and other with diminished motor skills. Horses also help with the posture, balance, mobility and function of the patient. Dolphins therapy offers children a chance to experience low-impact swimming in a low-stress environment. This help children focus and build motor skills. Dogs help release tension and dispel anxiety. They also can motivate children to participate in physical therapy
