Self- monitoring speech can help solve the problem with speech that society faces now. There are many issues with speech that society faces. Many things said in our society can be considered uncivil and sometimes rude, but self-monitoring speech can help stop this problem.
Self-monitoring speech can help a person with speech because the person is able to recognize when they say something mean or rude. If a person unintentionally said something rude or mean, and they do not recognize what they did incorrectly, it can be hard for a person to identify the problem that the person caused and that person might continue speaking in a rude manner. However, if the person is able to stay alert and able to listen to advice other people give them, then it will be much better for the person who wrote the comment, and for the person who was contradicted. In paragraph five of source two it says “Another factor that’s seen as contributing to the incivility crisis is a general disregard for learning the art of debate. It’s been argued that citizens should receive more training to learn what makes communication acceptable or unacceptable.” This supports this claim because if a person disregards the mean comment, or does not notify the person who was mean, then that person might not know that others were affected in that way and may hurt other people’s feelings. …show more content…

Self-monitoring what we say helps us stay in tune with what we say, and what others say. Once a person has developed recognition of what they have said incorrectly, they are also able to inform others about the problems they might have with speech.
