Introduction: A self-checkout is a mechanical device used to process costumers’ purchases. The self-checkout is an alternative of the cashier checkout method. The purpose of the self-checkout is to reduce the cost of labors and satisfy the costumer needs. Four major steps follow the self-checkout process: activating the checkout process, scanning the items, selecting payment method, and bagging the purchases (see Figure1). Discussion: Activating the self- checkout process Activating the self-checkout is a manual process during which the costumer touches the start screen to scan the items. Activating the self-checkout does not require a cashier or an employee in order to complete the process. Once the costumer touches the start button to begin the checkout process, the machine will show a message to start scanning the items (see Figure 1). Scanning the items Scanning the items is a manual process during which the costumer scans the barcodes of the items into the machine. Scanning the items in a self-checkout machine will need costumers to scan the barcodes or input the type of the items by themselves (see Figure 1). There are several methods of payment such as credit, debit, cash, etc. If the costumer selected a credit or debit card methods, the screen will take the costumer to a small device that needs the costumer to swipe the card to finish this step (see Figure 1). On the other hand, if the costumer chose the cash method, a small box will open up and it say insert the cash to complete the process.
