How much privacy do we as the American people truly have? American Privacy is not directly guaranteed in any manner under the United States Constitution; however, by the Fourth Amendment, Americans are protected from illegal search and seizure. The personal connection Americans have with their phones, tablets, and computers; and the rising popularity of online shopping and social websites due to the massive influence the social media has on Americans, it is clear why this generation is called the Information Age, also known as Digital Age. With the Internet being a huge part of our lives, more and more personal data is being made available, because of our ever-increasing dependence and use of the Internet on our phones, tablets, and computers. Technology is robbing people of personal privacy. Today’s generation view technology as a basic necessity. It is found everywhere. There are even homes that are completely automated. However it is safe to say were being robbed of our personal privacy. For instance many people carry their cellular phone to the washroom. Another example of the intrusive nature of the cell phone is at funerals. Many have been at such a private and personal moment only to be interrupted by the irreverent ringtone from a cellular phone. Not to mention that there are families who no longer enjoy face to face communication with their loved ones. All emotions are now translated by emoticons, a computer application.

Through technology, people around the world can communicate with one another even if they are in two different countries. The largest form of technology people use to connect with one another is the Internet where people can participate in, Facebook, Twitter, Youtube, LinkedIn, and many other social websites. Social network site popularity is overwhelmingly high even major corporations have accounts allowing people to like their page or follow the company. When a person wants to have a video chat they can use a webcam, and using a webcam give people the opportunity to visually see the person and the person’s environment. Today, people openly and publically share information about their life on social networks from activities to pictures of their life without too much concern for who can all read and see the information. Technology is a useful tool to connect people across the globe, yet people use social network sites to communicate openly by publically posting information about their life which decreases the persons privacy since anybody can have access to the information and where the boundary lies between personal and public life.
