Personal Space
My project is about personal space. It is about finding out why people
tend to have their own personal space. Personal space is the region
surrounding a person. Each individual has their own personal space.
Distance from strangers varies than distance from families and
relatives. Method used will be participant observation which is a
qualitative method. It is one of the most popular and widely used
research methods. The main advantages of participant observation is
that it allows you to have an insight on how the individuals of a
society perform and the ways in which they think and why.
I chose to investigate into this area because this topic is quite of a
challenge. The main advantages of participant observation are that it
allows the anthropologists to obtain a deeper and more experienced
insight on the activities that the individuals of a society perform
and the ways in which they think and that it also allows the
anthropologists to gain a good overview of how and why a society
functions. The disadvantages of participant observation are that it is
sometimes unwelcome by the society being studied, as they often feel
disturbed and that the anthropologist is invading their privacy. It is
also often difficult for the ethnographer to go native, and, even when
he does; problems arise as he may begin to lose objectivity after
becoming too much a part of that society. The problems that can arise
due to Participant observation include:
· Gender - certain genders are more welcome than others into different
societies. Women can be seen as inferior/ be threatening to men/ can’t
integrate w/ men.
· Ethnicity- ethnogra...

personal space than those not used to crowded places.
The personal space is not due to a case of bad breath or body odor,
but because closeness leads a sense of intimacy that is at odds with
their relationship to the other individual. In conclusion:
* The personal space is larger if you are talking to a stranger.
* The better you know the person you're talking to, the smaller the
space may be.
* The personal space is usually larger for two men than for two
women.
* The personal space may be very small for a man and a woman if they
are in a relationship.
* The personal space may be larger than normal for a man and a woman
who are strangers to each other.
* The personal space size may differ for different cultures.
Our society has institutionalized particular behaviors such as fixing our appearance, crying, belching, defecation, and flatulence deviant to perform in a public setting. Therefore, we rely on what Cahill terms as “performance regions” to relieve ourselves of these deviant behaviors. Public restrooms are performance regions that afford individuals the privacy (negative interpersonal rituals) to release bodily waste, cry, and discuss situations
Some men are criticized for having a fear of intimacy. The sheer fact that the term is used as one of criticism, rather than just one of reality, shows that many men do not have the problem, and that some women prefer men who are ready to share their emotions. Some men are addressing the issue directly. In the essay "Can Gays and Straights be Friends?", Paul Monette states, "We make terrific friends, we queers, perhaps because we have traveled so far to reach the free country of the heart. All men deserve to live there.
other people! How do you think it looks: you all the time in a man’s room?” (2,4). For a
There are two important areas in this research- territoriality and use of personal space, all while each have an important bearing on the kinds of messages we send as we use space. Standing at least three feet apart from someone is a norm for personal space.
The culture of the gym is slowly coming together just after two days of observations. The gym is primarily a male dominant place to do but in our college the only area that is completely dominant is the weight lifting area and that’s only during prime hours. Also on the note of personal space there is noticeably a tendency for both male and female to have a certain amount of space around them like a personal bubble.
Truth: Both of my roommates debunked this myth quickly. They told me upfront that they like things “clean and neat,” which is always a good thing.
...stics of males and females. For this reason, women and men are greatly influenced by difference perspective.
Chuck Wendig has said writing the middle of a novel is the hardest task. He calls it the mushy middle. Others call it the sagging middle. Liminality are the in-between moments. It is often an interval of tribulation, of halt and alteration. Your old habits, beliefs and even personal identity deteriorates. In that moment of liminality, you have the chance to become someone new. Liminal space is the middle of every great story. In movies, it is the period you find that there is a twist in the plot. Change happens through liminal space, which is the period of alteration and transformation. The word, liminal means “threshold”. It can relate to a transition from childhood to adulthood, the time between wounded and healing, the transition from life to death. From personal experience, I can say I went through a period of liminality. Liminality to me included me transitioning from one culture to another. The period between the end of high school and the beginning of college was a liminal space for me. For me, this liminality involved me moving away from home to another country to study. It involved me breaking ties with friends, saying our goodbyes and also involved a period of transformation. This experience has transformed me into the independent, self reliant person I am today.
One big implicit social norm involves personal space. In our society it is implicitly know that you give people enough space when waiting in line or when sitting next to them as not to invade their personal bubble. I thought it would be particularly interesting to see what people did the moment you crossed that “bubble line.” Periodically throughout the day I would intrude upon people’s bubbles. For varied results, this occurred in classrooms, the elevator, the lunch line, the lunch table, and at work. During classes and at lunch I would move my chair really close to that of the person next to me. While in the lunch line and in the elevator I would stand really close to the person, even if there was plenty of space to spread out. At work, again I stood really close to the person when talking to them.
It is fairly clear to the reader that the man and woman's ideas of a happy future are not the same. ...
Space communication can help an observer depict a lot from a conversation he or she is witnessing. Around 2:00 p.m. Friday afternoon I was walking out of the bookstore in building eight at north campus. I decided to sit at one of the picnic tables, from a distance I saw two young African American students, around 21 or 22 years old sitting down on the swings. I quickly put on my glasses for a better view. I noticed that there was barely any space in between the two; they were stuck together like glue. I automatically assumed that they were involved, and after the young lady placed her head on the guys shoulder it amplified my suspicions. The angle I was...
Personal space, body language, and overall interaction between the participants in the gym was something that I hadn't paid enough attention to in the past, from the distance I could see that their interests. The intimate couples that I noticed in the gym seemed again sought to have created a private space for them by erecting invisible barriers through their private body language directed only at each other, resulting in considerable more space between these couples and other groups of people in the gym. It was a clear and present body language of please do not bother us attitude left a sense of diffused power that would be involved power relationships that operate without covert commands and requests. The dynamics of the couple was something that was very obvious, in that I was able to note the dominant and the submissive person. The person who had a tendency to meet the needs and the one who had the ability to be demanding.
When it comes to cleanliness in the workplace we want to know the actual benefits reaped from employees on job sites. Cleaning work areas on a normal basis help prevent dirt buildup, grime, and dust, but there are several other reasons employees should be concerned with cleanliness at job sites (work.chron.com). The biggest topics of discussion are: Infection control, injury prevention, professional reputation, legal compliance, and employee satisfaction. It has been said that people tend to take more pride in their work in a clean work environment. Workplace cleanliness is very important for employee morale.
Separation among society is a problem in lots of countries, and that is one of the many reasons they are falling apart. Separation among society is the process of separating different people to different places in the society to make them all feel special. The United States of America shows separation among society. According to AustralianPolitics.com “The US is a Federal system. This means that power is divided between a central/national government and the States. The national government is referred to as the Federal Government.”. This is separation among society because the representatives have been divided by their rank and power. Separation among society is in North Korea, and has happened in Ancient Rome. This also shows separation
Fundamentally, all human being’s capabilities and performance reflect a complex collaboration of biological and social-environmental factors. In fact, unique environments that are “nurtured” in one’s life can greatly influence the “nature” of basic biological processes. Such is the case with personal space. Even though human beings have a “natural” need to interact through human contact, the social-environmental factors in a human being’s culture dictate how much personal space is acceptable. Thus, it isn’t nature alone that determines what exact distance is comfortable between human beings during conversations.
