Being a parent is a lifelong commitment individuals make after having a child. Parenting Hal Edward Runkel, a licensed marriage and family therapist, takes a scream free approach to parenting. Runkel earned his master’s degree from Abilene Christian University. His current practices are in family therapy, organizational consulting, and professional coaching. With his book, ScreamFree Parenting, he hopes to “calm the world, one relationship at a time” (Runkel, 2007, p. 1).
The purpose to ScreamFree parenting as introduced by Runkel, is to give parents the relationship they’ve always desired to have with their children. Runkel targets parents of toddlers, adolescents, and launching adults. In his text, he applies the concept that parents are raising adults not children. Runkel used real life experiences and anecdotes to illustrate the impact of our emotions on our reactions and how it can have a detrimental affect on relationships. The book did a great job of providing insights on how to handle our reactions to all the challenging situations that can arise when raising children. I agree with the presented ideas about parents gearing their attention towards themselves and away from their children. ScreamFree Parenting is a proactive approach to learning how to effectively interact with your children without resorting to screaming. Runkel makes a valid point about allowing your children to learn that there are consequences to their choices without trying to protect them. I’m a fan of this text because it underlines that parents are raising adults and not just children. Which is why it’s important to allow children to make their own decisions in the parenting process. There are limitations to this text such as, a few religious references that could give people the impression that it’s only for Christian
