Decreasing the costs of school supplies is an effective way to decrease future potential drop outs in the US. Every year, millions of teenagers are dropping out of high school for various reasons such as; Loss of interest, becomes a mother/father, or has to take care of a family member. A large number of students who enroll in high school end up dropping out vs the small number of students who do graduate with a diploma. However, the costs of school supplies have been gradually increasing since 2015 all the way up to 2017. Unless, by decreasing the costs of school supplies, the dropout percentage rates will decrease in the US.

Millions of families struggle to make rent each month, and with the cost of school supplies increasing is a big struggle amongst the low-income population. According to the latest Backpack Index by Huntington Bank, the costs of school supplies each year are “$1,402 for high school students, a 9 percent increase compared to 2014”. That’s a huge jump from three-years ago, it may not seem like much but if you do the math correctly it’s billions of dollars a year just for being spent on schools supplies such as; Pencils, crayons, laptops, notebooks, etc. just for those few things would be over several-hundred. As a student in the school system, there are many mental conditions that could affect how they perform on a daily basis. One of the most prevalent is Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). This is defined as “a disorder characterized by a persistent pattern of inattention and/or hyperactivity (Gale Encyclopedia of Medicine). Schools have served unhealthy foods and snacks for years and it's made school an unhealthy environment. Sugar count in food for kids can be very dangerous, it can cause them to do poor in school and start to be stressed. It is important to find the means to prevent these students that are victimized by skyrocketing tuition from dropping out, and encourage all incoming high school seniors to continue their education. The reality is that the rise in college tuition is no longer affordable for the average American household. Parents cannot afford to pay for their children’s tuition on their incomes and students are very often forced to enroll part-time in order to have the time to get a job to pay for college. This very often causes a decrease in these students GPA and consequently increases the number of dropouts in the long run. Most will agree that we need a further cultivated society, but to accomplish this, we must take in consideration lowering the expenses of college tuition. It is recognized that decreasing college tuition does have various drawbacks. For example, it may cut into funds for items such as classroom equipment, essentials, staff pay, administration, and dormitories (Goodman). The reason that some schools can’t do things like buy computers and maintain their buildings to begin with is because the school funding system is so ineffective. The US government pays only 7% of all school money, and the rest is up to the states and the tax payers. Whatever money the states won’t pay is paid as school tax, part of your property taxes, which are higher or lower depending on how much your home is worth. How does dropping out of high school affects students’ lives in the future? Students’ dropping out has become a crisis, President Obama said, “It’s time for all of us to come together parents and students, principals, and teachers, business leaders and elected officials to end America’s dropout crisis” (“ President Obama”). There are 7 thousand students’ that drop out of high school that adds up to about 1.2 million each year, wouldn’t it be nice to drop that number and help kids stay in school instead of dropping out of high school(“ President Obama”). Students’ shouldn’t drop out of high school because they couldn’t go to college, couldn’t hold down a job, and would struggle making minimum wage for the rest of their life.
Public colleges must be affordable to anyone who wishes to attend. If colleges lack to provide this to students, it can affect dropouts, a student’s ability focus, and cause stress. The problem of lack of funding is that colleges have insufficient funds. Therefore, the best possible solution for the problem of lack of funding would be increasing and collecting more funds from state taxes. Collecting funds from the state’s taxes is an effective solution because students get more academic support programs, which decreases dropouts.
Expectations of today’s educational qualifications for high school students are different than it was in the past. It is not uncommon to hear about a student who did not graduate from school. As shown in table 1, 97 students from Stanly County dropped out of school in the 2011- 2012 school year (“Grade 7-13 Dropout Counts and Rates (pdf.62kb)”). Last school year 3.01 percent of North Carolina’s high school students dropped out of school according to the 2011-12 Consolidated Data Report, as a result the total number of students who dropped out of high school in the 2012 year is 13,488. It is also noted that the top five reasons NC students drop out of school are: 1. Attendance, 2. Enrollment in a Community College, 3. Unknown, 4. Moved, School status unknown, 5. Lack of Engagement. (“Dropout prevention and Intervention”) This number is very high considering that there are only five major high schools in the Stanly county district. This is why I think it is important that something should be done to reduce the high school dropout rate in Stanly County.
