Tragic hero or not a tragic hero, that is the question. In William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, Romeo is a “tragic hero.” Tragic hero's are characters with fatal flaws, Romeo's character flaws include that he is very irrationally and emotionally driven. We get a glimpse of his irrationality and emotionalism in the very first scene. We learned that his parents are very concerned about him because he has been continuously staying out all night, for multiple days and been seen in the morning crying. And as well as in another scene where he's speaking about the sadness he feels after the rejection from Rosaline. His reaction to this rejection is definitely intense, irrational and very emotional. A peripeteia is something that leads another thing towards a tragic fate though Juliet definitely qualifies as one of his peripeteias, she is not the only one he has. In Act III scene i when Tybalt stabs Mercutio and then afterwards when Romeo kills Tybalt it marks a peripeteia by showing that after that event Romeo is in great danger of getting a death penalty and the fight between the two families is back to being worse than ever because of Tybalt’s relations to the Capulets, when it is found out he is murdered Lady Capulet is outraged and when she asks Benvolio who had killed him, Benvolio lies and is distrusted for his relations with the Montagues and is seen as loyal to their family which makes the Capulets hate towards the Montagues grow even stronger. This also supports the idea of Romeo being a tragic hero because of his actions he took upon Tybalt, this error leads to even more destruction between the two families in the future.
