Romeo changes throughout the book. When Romeo went to the Capulets party, he was in love with Rosaline. He saw Juliet and immediately loved her. In act two scene two it Romeo says this about Juliet, "Two of the fairest stars in all the heaven, Having some business, do entreat her eyes To twinkle in their spheres till they return." He compares her eyes to stars in the night sky. Romeo talks about Juliet and is wanting to talk to her. This shows how Romeo is loving and sweet. In the last act of the book Romeo sees Juliet dead in the tomb. She is not really dead, but he doesn't know that. He kills himself so he can be with her in heaven. Romeo is a very loving person, but in one scene he turns into a very hateful person. In act three scene one it says this about the fight, "Tybalt insults Romeo, but Romeo, who has just returned from his wedding, remains calm. Mercutio, on the other hand, is furious with Tybalt, and they begin to fight. As Romeo tries to separate them, Tybalt stabs Mercutio, who later dies." Romeo feels this sudden rage. In act one scene two it says, "Benvolio urges Romeo to go to the party to see how Rosaline compares with other women." In scene five it says, "Romeo suddenly sees Juliet and falls in love at first sight." Romeo sees Juliet and immediately forgets about Rosaline. Romeo changed from loving Rosaline that broke his heart to Juliet that will eventually love him later in the story.
I chose to make a diorama on the scene when Romeo kills Tybalt because I feel like this is the scene with the most change. Romeo seems like a very loving guy. He loves Juliet and his friend Mercutio. Tybalt killed Mercutio, and I could see how Romeo turned into to a hateful person because of that. He is very loving, then he is hateful. Romeo made a huge mistake because he then got banished. Thought the play, these lovers go through many obstacles that range from arranging a wedding and finding a time to meet to Juliet trying to get out of marrying Paris. The entire time fate is tossing them around. Romeo realizes this after he kills Tybalt, Juliet’s cousin, in a brawl. At first, Romeo does not want to fight because Romeo and Juliet are already married at this time and he knows that they are cousins. Tybalt asks for a brawl from Romeo but Mercutio fights instead. Mercutio gets killed by Tybalt and that is what makes Romeo mad and fight Tybalt.
Romeo and Juliet is one of the most famous love tales, but what if the play is not actually a tale of love, but of total obsession and infatuation. Romeo has an immature concept of love and is rather obsessive. Romeo is not the only person in the play who is obsessed though. Many people throughout the play notice his immaturities about love. Very rarely was true love actually shown in the play. attention. Romeo childishly cries to his friend, Benvolio because Rosaline will not love him back and says " She hath forsworn to love, and in that vow/ Do I live dead that live to tell it now" (I i 219-220). Romeo is stating that he's ready to die for loving Rosaline. This is exactly the same attitude Romeo had towards Juliet a little later in the play. Romeo senses tensions are high with Tybalt, so he states, “I do protest I never injured thee but love thee better than thou canst devise.” (Lines 65-66 Act Three, Scene One). Romeo is trying to diffuse the situation because he realizes that Tybalt is his love's cousin. Mercutio is surprised by Romeo’s behavior, so he decides to fight Tybalt himself. Mercutio’s decision to fight Tybalt leads to his own death. Romeo is angered by the death of Mercutio and states, “Now, Tybalt, take the “villain" back again/ That late thou gavest me; for Mercutio’s soul.” (Lines 123-124 of Act Three, Scene One). Romeo is indicating that Tybalt is the villain now, because he slayed Mercutio. Romeo forgets about his attempt to befriend the Capulets and slays Tybalt. Romeo, murderer of Tybalt, solely focuses on Juliet and states “Ha, banishment? Be merciful, say “death"/For exile hath more terror in his look.” (Lines 12-13 of Act Three, Scene Three). When asked by Benvolio to make peace in the streets, Tybalt bluntly responds,” talk of peace, I hate the word. As I hate hell all Montagues.” This is the attitude of Tybalt throughout the play. He believes he is doing all for the best and uses violence as his tool. He gets angry at the ball with Romeo being there, “villain as a guest,” and believes it best to defend his family’s honor by later taking revenge. When Tybalt finds Romeo, he thinks it best to fight him and when he ends up killing Mercutio he believes he has done his duty by causing Romeo the same hurt he has brought Tybalt, “the injuries that thou hast done me.”
Romeo, son of Montague and Lady Montague, is introduced into the story as a depressed, upset young man, moping over a girl who will never love him back. As he says to Benvolio, “She’ll not be hit with Cupid’s arrow. She hath Dian’s wit, and, in strong proof of chastity well-armed, from Love’s weak childish bow she lives uncharmed” (Romeo and Juliet I i 203-206). Romeo states that his true love will not love him as he thinks of her, as she intends to stay chaste and turn into a nun, thus upsetting Romeo and putting him in a depressed state of mind. He is a very extreme person, and in a way, that contributes to the hastiness of the whole play, as Romeo is always at either of his two extremes; his mood either quite happy or relatively dismal. He shows that in his thoughts, as he is at first convinced he should never love another woman, but then he meets Juliet only days afterward and forgets about his previous love. Romeo and Juliet Although Romeo and Juliet become inextricably smitten with one another, they both enter into the relationship from different perspectives. Their love is strong, but each has their reasons for the intensity of their love. Romeo has just come out of another ?crush?. He has liked Rosaline for quite awhile, but things do not work out because the feelings are not mutual. Romeo sees that Juliet is a beautiful lady that he falls in love with right away, while he attends the Capulet Party. Juliet also instantly falls in love with Romeo, but it could be more of an escape for her.
This hatred causes many brawls including one in Act 3 scene 1. This brawl is a pawn of fate that pulls Romeo further apart from Juliet. In this scene Tybalt is upset because he believes that Romeo had crashed the Capulet ball, though in reality he had no harmful intentions. He is blood thirsty and wants to battle Romeo. Romeo is Mad, passionate and hasty. He is already symbolically dead and Mercutio and Benvolio believe that he is in no state of mind to fight, and if he were to do so he would not stand a chance against Tybalt, the prince of cats. Mercutio Is worried about this so in his attempt to protect Romeo he fights Tybalt which unleashes a big fight. Tybalt kills Mercutio. This upsets Romeo so much that he kills Tybalt because he was overwhelmed with passion and makes a hasty decision. Now bringing things back to the Capulet ball. Fate begins with Tybalt hearing Romeo express his love for Juliets beauty aloud and becomes filled with anger because he believes that Romeo is there to crash party since he is a Montague. Romeo says he is only going to rejoice in splendor of his own. Romeo believes he will only ever be in love with Rosaline. But, what he doesn’t know is he will soon fall in love with a girl named Juliet at the ball.
In this interpretation, Zeffirelli uses body language and movement through his choices in the fight, to his actions during and after the Tybalt’s death to emphasize Romeo’s innocence. Throughout the fight, Tybalt is visibly the more experienced fighter as Romeo out of breath almost and stumbling through the fight. This choice shows the viewer that Romeo is not a fighter and does not have much practice in combat. Another one of Romeo’s actions that shows his innocence is how he kills Tybalt. It may appear to some that Romeo accidentally kills Tybalt because he was simply protecting himself and just happened to pierce him. Likewise, Luhrmann’s interpretation uses different elements but still portrays Romeo as innocent. Romeo and Tybalt get out of their crashed cars and approach each other. Tybalt points his gun towards Romeo’s head and the thunder in the background rolls once again. Both their eyes are filled with rage and fear when Romeo snatches the gun away from Tybalt and points it back at him. 1. Romeo is so love struck that he compares Juliet to many things that show contrast to one another. For example he says that she stands out against the darkness like a jeweled earring hanging against the cheek of an African. “It seems she hangs upon the cheek of night like a rich jewel in an Ethiope’s ear.” He also says that she is like a white dove in the middle of a flock of crows; “So shows a snowy dove trooping with crows.” At this point it clear that Romeo has fallen out of love with Rosaline and fell deeply in love with Juliet.
First, when he goes into the masquerade party he was still in love with Rosaline and went because he wanted to catch sight of her, but when he sees Juliet for the first time he is suddenly in love with her. When they got the chance to meet each other he was suppose to be holy and not sin, but instead he tells her that he wants to kiss her, “O then, dear saint, let lips do what hands do.” Romeo was quickly to kiss her and for her to kiss him back. Romeo first notices Juliet during her parents' banquet, which causes them to fall in love at first sight. His reaction in Act I, scene IV illustrates that Juliet's appearance significantly affects him: “O, she doth teach the torches to burn bright! It seems she hangs upon the cheek of night. As a rich jewel in an Ethiop's ear- Beauty too rich for use, for earth too dear! (Act I, scene IV, 45-48). Romeo swiftly decides that he is in love with Juliet though he hasn’t spoken to her yet. Juliet is more sensible and declines his first moves, but soon lets him kiss her. At this time, the feelings of both lovers look to be the same. Nevertheless, fate checks their loyalty by revealing their identities. Juliet is a Capulet, and Romeo a Montague, which is an unearthing that shocks them both, but they do not doubt the love they have together. In fact, this leads the reader to accept their love as genuine. In final, their compassion and devotion towards one another is too strong for it to be lust, which proves they are in true love.
As already shown, both Romeo and Juliet are horrified to discover that they were family enemies. Despite of this, they both choose to devote their love for eachother. Given this point, it is unrequited love that brings Romeo and Juliet together. But this also means that they would have to get over the fact that their families hate each other. This eventually leads them to forgiving the rival family for all the hateful acts that have occurred against one another. This is not the only forgiveness that is experienced in this play. Tybalt is a Montague with a fiery attitude. After catching Romeo at a party he was not supposed to be at, Tybalt had it out for Romeo. Just after Romeo and Juliet’s wedding, Tybalt comes looking for him wanting to fight. Romeo does not want to fight because he now loves Tybalt since he is family to him, but neither Tybalt or anyone else knows this reason. Quickly Mercutio steps in and tells Tybalt that he will fight him in honour of Romeo. Sadly this leads to the death of Mercutio. Romeo is angry and in need of revenge, which creates an intense fight between Tybalt and Romeo. Romeo wins this battle, killing Tybalt. He leaves in a hurry, only to discover that he would be banished from Verona. The death of Tybalt is absolutely devastating to Juliet. Her cousin was murdered by her husband. But she did not hesitate to forgive Romeo, she did so right away. She knew that Romeo had a reason for this incident and decides to
Tybalt was a adversary of Romeo and had the drift to kill him. His spleen of the situation is Romeo trying to love his coz Juliet. He approached Romeo and Mercutio looking for a fight. Tybalt and Mercutio ended up fighting and Tybalt killed Mercutio, because Tybalt did this, he deserved the death penalty for his transgression. Romeo then took revenge and killed him (3.1.70). This is a legal issue because Tybalt was going to be treated to the death penalty anyway so Romeo killing him was just like giving him the death penalty. This death is a lot different than the others because his was a legal issue and he deserved to die, the other deaths in the play like Romeo, Juliet and Mercutio decided to die for a family member that they love.
