In Romeo and Juliet, a tragedy written by William Shakespeare, two star-crossed lovers make catastrophic decisions that will cost them their existence. Romeo and Juliet’s tragic decisions are caused by their underdeveloped brain. Although, these decisions could have been prevented.
Furthermore, Romeo and Juliet's catastrophic decisions are due to their underdeveloped brain. The brain is not fully developed until the early 20s, meaning Romeo and Juliet’s brain are not fully developed. A key part of the brain that causes irrational decisions to be made is the prefrontal cortex. The prefrontal cortex is not mature yet while the limbic system is, which also plays a key role. During the duel between Romeo and Tybalt, Romeo executes Tybalt in an emotional rage for the murder of his beloved friend, Mercutio. Due to Romeo's brain, not being fully developed Romeo acted on emotion and did not think ahead of the consequences causing him this regrettable decision. Since Romeo’s brain is not fully developed meaning the limbic system has the upper hand on the prefrontal cortex. Which means Romeo’s actions are based on the emotional rage of his friend’s murder and the consequences of murdering his cousin in-law and the aftermath of killing an individual are not acknowledged by him. Due to their mother and father not being there for them, since their parents are uninvolved some may argue that is why Romeo and Juliet acted this way. However, Nurse and Friar Laurence did act as parents towards them. Therefore, Romeo and Juliet did have parents, meaning their Nurse and Friar Laurence parenting style is high in responsiveness and low in demandingness. Due to Nurse and Laurence never demanding them anything and helping them with thing, which is responsive. And according to studies, parents who are high in responsiveness and low in demandingness children will most likely have no trouble with behavior and lower levels of depression. Although, Romeo and Juliet have problems with behavior and depression. For example, how Romeo and Juliet marry each other behind their parents back. Another example is how Romeo is extremely depressed over Rosaline at the beginning of the play. Therefore, contradicting their claim. Romeo and Juliet's behavior is based on their undeveloped
