There are many similarities and differences in Romeo and Juliet. In this essay i will be sharing a few of them. To start with, Romeo and Juliet takes place in Verona in about 1594, while West Side Story takes places in New York City in 1957. Tony is the modern version of Romeo and Maria is the modern Juliet. A huge similarity is that the major conflict of both books is the opposing families do not agree with the relationship of their child. The resolution of this conflict is tragic in both and results in death for both male lovers. Secondly, a difference would be when Juliet finds her lover Romeo is dead Juliet kills herself, Maria doesn't kill herself but instead she takes out her emotions on the two gangs with a gun. When Romeo

Romeo and Juliet is a tragedy- but it did not have to be. Romeo and Juliet is the tragic story of two star-crossed lovers, Romeo and Juliet, who are the son and daughter of two feuding families, the Montagues and the Capulets. Written by the famed playwright Shakespeare, Romeo and Juliet takes place in the 14-15 century in the cities of Verona and Mantua, cities in northern Italy. After a series of events that involves Romeo getting banished from Verona and Juliet getting forced to marry a count, Paris, they kill themselves. It has been argued for centuries about who is to blame for the deaths of Romeo and Juliet.
“Do not deny to him that you love me.”(Rom. 4.1 25) Paris, one of Juliet’s suitors, is trying to win Juliet’s love at the same time that Romeo loves her. Together, Paris and Romeo are juxtaposed, while vying for Juliet’s love, so that they are compared and contrasted. Both have similar traits but are different through how they act towards people and personalities. Paris and Romeo are alike in integrity but very different by their personalities and treatment of Juliet.
Romeo and Juliet is the tragic story of two young, “star-crossed” lovers from feuding families, destined for disaster. The Capulets and the Montagues have an ancient grudge on one another that has been passed down over generations. Unfortunately, Romeo and Juliet end up victims of their families’ vicious loathing. Romeo and Juliet’s story has several intertwining themes such as the aforementioned hatred between the Capulets and Montagues and the revenge Romeo strives for after his friend Mercutio’s death. Also, the love and passion between Romeo and Juliet and the loyalty of Romeo and his friends. Honour and revenge also feature frquently throughout the play including Juliet’s pressure to honour her family, and the revenge Romeo sees as his duty when Tybalt kills Mercutio.
A Comparison of Romeo and Juliet and West Side Story. There is a lot in common between the two plays Romeo And Juliet and West Side Story. The main male characters have many things in common.
The relationships between the characters of West Side Story and Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet are reflective of their respective time periods and the original story. Maria and Juliet represent a slightly practical counterpart to both Tony’s and Romeo’s idealistic nature. Maria’s brother Bernardo and Juliet’s cousin Tybalt portray impulsively stubborn and violent characters who both die from wounds inflicted by the male lead. Lieutenant Schrank is similar to Prin...
The two plays, Romeo and Juliet and Julius Caesar by William Shakespeare, have many differences and similarities. Obviously since they were both written by William Shakespeare, then they will have some similarities because a majority of writers have similar traits in how they write each play, novel, movie, etcetera… Romeo from Romeo and Juliet and Brutus from Julius Caesar have an abundant amount of similarities and differences throughout both plays. A majority of the characters had similarities and difference as well, but Romeo and Brutus’s stood out the most to the readers. Romeo and Brutus both did something detrimental that ended up being the cause of their lovers suicide, but it was for different reasons. Then the way that Romeo did not
Plot: The plots are very much the same but are slightly altered to fit the time period that they were set in. One example of this is the names of Romeo and Juliet vs the other two plays. Juliet, Maria, and Thisbe one could see that the characters were from different periods. The Hispanic name Maria symbolizes the great influx of Puerto Rican immigrants into NYC. Romeo and Juliet and Pyramus and Thisbe are more closely related, because of the conflict between these two plays is between the two true families. Whereas in West Side Story the two main lovers Tony and Maria there only known families are their gang families.
Both plays begin with a fight between the rival groups. In both plays, the main characters meet at a dance. Both Juliet and Maria have arranged marriages that they are not happy about. Throughout each play, the main characters are afraid of their families finding out about them seeing each other and frustrated that they have to hide their love. In both plays, when a fight happens, both Romeo and Tony kill their girlfriend 's relative; however in spite of this, both Juliet and Maria forgive them. Romeo and Tony both die at the end of the play. A major difference between these two plays is that in the end of Romeo and Juliet, Juliet kills herself, however in the end of West Side Story, Maria is still alive. While Juliet reacts to the death of her lover by taking her own life, Maria reacts to Tony 's death by causing the fighting gangs to see the consequences of their feuding and find peace with each other. Also, both of these plays end with the families, or groups, united for a
In the stories Romeo and Juliet, by William Shakespeare, and West Side Story, by Arthur Laurent, the lovers are so similar yet have so many differences. They, Maria, Tony, Romeo, and Juliet, are both working against the odds, each couple has their own go-between, and they all die. Although there are obvious differences with each story such as time setting, problems, events. However, there are some less obvious differences such as what these stories meant in their time and the message these stories send. This essay will cover the differences and similarities.
The language used in these two scenes is quite different. In Romeo and Juliet the majority of the scene is of the two lovers confessing their undying love for each other using beautiful language and many metaphors. They also discuss marriage and serious commitments to each other. In Westside Story, this scene is spent singing to each other, which I find, makes it more romantic but has less tension. They also don’t seem as serious about commitment towards each other.
Love is a beautiful thing, it always works out in the end. Everyone is always happy and no problems occur. West Side Story, a musical by Leonard Bornstein based on Shakespeare 's Romeo and Juliet parallels a love story of two star-crossed lovers. The play takes place in 1961 in New York City. This musical displays importance because it shows that nothing can overcome the power of love. This play is based on a love story between the main characters of Maria and Tony. Theses two are from different gangs that trouble to get along. They are from different gangs that do not get along at all. Roughly two hundred blocks make up Manhattan’s West Side, which stretches from Central Park West to the Hudson River. For the most part, the street youths
Romeo and Juliet and West Side Story share many similar themes. Romeo and Juliet both chronicle a story of overcoming prejudice and hatred, forbidden love, and defying stereotypes that nobody thought could be broken. The two stories are similar in a multitude of ways, even though their settings are centuries apart- Romeo and Juliet set in the 1500’s, and West Side Story set in the 1950’s. Romeo and Juliet and West Side Story both teach a lesson of how prejudice can teach you how to hate, and how one of your rivals may be the one who helps you remember how to love.
Instead of bloody fights, the movie puts in dance and singing scenes. The characters are also different because some of them are in relationships, while others even completely change their role. For example Bernardo is Maria’s brother in the story, while in the original play Tybalt plays her cousin. The nurse is also not in a relationship with anyone, while Anita is in a relationship with Bernardo and that fact drastically changes the storyline. Maria and Juliet are very different. While Maria is poor and has a job, Juliet is rich and is not employed. Towards the end of the original play Juliet kills herself after Romeo dies, but Maria doesn’t. Tony and Romeo also show quite a difference in character. Tony is a leader of a gang and poor, while Romeo is rich and married. In the end Romeo kills himself, while Tony is running away from Chino. Chino is similar to Paris in Romeo and Juliet, but a little different because Paris got killed by Romeo, while Chino slew Tony. Friar Laurence and the Doc are different in many ways. The Doc does not get very involved in their relationship, while Friar Laurence made some of the most important decisions in the story. West Side Story’s setting is set in the Upper West side of New York City in the late 1950s, while Romeo and Juliet is set mostly in Verona and Mantua, Italy. The musical is mostly set on the
One major difference is the setting. Romeo and Juliet take place in old times in a city in Italy. West Side Story takes place in New York in 1961. This obviously sets up for a lot of differences, for example there were guns and pocket knives in West Side Story. One of the biggest differences in these stories is that Maria does not kill herself in the end unlike Juliet. Since these stories are similar you think Maria is going to kill herself after Tony died but she doesn't. As we know Juliet decided to kill herself after she found out Romeo was dead. The endings are essentially different in these stories. Finally a third difference is in
