Everyone has heard of the tragic love story of Romeo and Juliet but is it a love story? This story takes place in Verona Italy and talks about a boy named Romeo who was desperate for love and girl named Juliet who didn't want to marry Paris, the man her parents arranged her to get married to. These two individuals fall in love within seconds of seeing each other at a party, and suddenly nothing matters besides that person. They love each other so much to the point where they get married the next day. However, this causes more trouble and ends up with them dead. This so-called “love story” is no love story at all, instead, it’s about kids growing up dealing with situations that they don’t know how to deal with.

Romeo is getting over the heartbreak of his ex-lover Rosaline. The only reason that he went to the party was to go see Rosaline. We see him say, “I’ll go along…to rejoice in splendor of mine own” (1.3.33) Benvolio gives him advice to “Examine other beauties, “so that his heart doesn’t break again when he sees Rosaline. However, Romeo does this too quickly. Within minutes of arriving at the party, he sees Juliet and immediately falls in love. He says, “Did my heart love till now? Forswear it, sight! For I ne'er saw true beauty till this night.” (1.5.50-51) Romeo goes on to talk about how amazing Juliet is, but is he just saying that to get over Rosaline? Juliet and Rosaline are both part of the Capulet family and both are beautiful. Romeo and Juliet “were victims of their hormones, who died before they had TIME to fall in love.” (McCauley) This was a relationship built on lust rather than love. Romeo and Juliet were both too young to understand what love was and didn't know the difference between liking someone and loving someone. They only met twice before getting married it seems a bit extreme to love someone that fast. What they thought was love was just them ignoring their problems and covering them up. In the poem “Weird” by Hanson, it describes how people may feel weird about things and what it feels like. This poem directly relates to how Romeo and Juliet are feel during this situation. These two are going through issues of their own and don’t know how to handle them since they’re so young. They feel like nothing is going their way, “Hoping that my luck will change,” (Hanson) so when they met each other they’re “reaching for a hand that can understand someone who feels the same.”
Romeo and Juliet is one of the most famous love tales, but what if the play is not actually a tale of love, but of total obsession and infatuation. Romeo has an immature concept of love and is rather obsessive. Romeo is not the only person in the play who is obsessed though. Many people throughout the play notice his immaturities about love. When the parents saw what their children's love for each other, they realized that their fighting had only led to suffering and insoluble conflict. It’s often said that love at first sight is what occurred in this dismal story but you can not truly be in love until you have gotten to know the person and actually talked to them. When Romeo first saw Juliet he was already saying he was in love with her and didn’t even speak to her, “Did my heart love till now? Forswear it, sight!” (I.V.52). When in actual, true love you must know the person. Juliet had just learned his name and she was already calling him her love, “My only love, sprung from my only hate!” (I.V.138). On top of that, they were just teenagers. Majority of all teenagers suffer from mood swings due to the hormones raging through their body. One day they’re angry the next they’re sad, so how could they have truly known what they have wanted? Yes, it is possible for teenagers to be in love, but it’s hard to tell whether it’s actual love. “One fairer than my love? The all-seeing sun” (I.II.96) In that line he was talking about a girl he met before he met Juliet, Romeo was claiming he was in love with her, Rosaline, and he was really down about that sitatuion. “Is Rosaline that thou didst love so dear, / So soon forsaken? Young men’s love then lies / Not truly in their hearts, but in their eyes.” (II.III.66-68) Friar Lawrence even pointed it out; if he was able to get over Rosaline that quickly then he did not love her. Romeo has an obsessive personality. The morning before he meets Juliet, he is obsessing on Rosaline. To see Rosaline, Romeo snuck into a Capulet’s party; once there, he meets Juliet and instantly he forgets his obsession of Rosaline, thinking Juliet is the most beautiful creature on earth. Friar Lawrence even acknowledges this when he states, “Young men’s love then lies / Not truly in their hearts but in their eyes” (II iii 67-68). Romeo’s affection is easily swayed from Rosaline to Juliet.

When Romeo meets Juliet, he claimed to be immediately in love. Although he has been sulking over Rosaline, when he met Juliet, he states, “Did my heart love till now? forswear it sight! For I ne’er saw true beauty till this night” (Act 1.5 Lines 51-52). The entire time as he envisions love with Rosaline, it was all incoherent. Romeo’s impulsive attitude causes him to fall head over heels with Juliet, which begins the drama in this play.
During the balcony scene Juliet explain, “My ears have not yet drunk a hundred words. Of that tongue’s uttering, yet I know the sound.” (2.2 58-59) Juliet is explaining her interactions with Romeo and how they have spoken less than one-hundred words between each other, but those hours of spending time with one another made her truly fall in “love” with Romeo. But Romeo and Juliet don’t know simple facts about one another. They don't even know one another personalities or fears. During their first altercation Romeo explains his feeling towards Juliet “Did my heart love till now? Forswear it, sight! For I ne’er saw true beauty till this night.” (1.5 49-50) When he first notices Juliet's he distinctively mistakens real love for Juliet's physical attractions. We also understand his infatuated love due to his intense feeling, along with the immediate switch of loving Rosaline to Juliet.
