Shakespeare, one of the most popular writers of the 17th century, wrote his plays with great emotion and reeled people in with his elaboration of love. He chose to portray love as a complicated emotion. His plays Romeo and Juliet and The Twelfth Night were two beautiful works of art which incorporated love by showing its complicity and just how tough it is to love someone. Shakespeare displays how inconstant love can be, the countless obstacles, and the forcefulness of love are all major factors in how perplexing love can be in both plays. Love in Shakespeare´s plays come with an essence of suspicion. You can never be sure how it will play out. They start to hurt the love connection because of the inability to meet one another or to even be with one another. In the Twelfth Night, Orsino dreams of how he can Olivia once again, and how much he loves her when Valentine comes in and reports the message he received from Lady Olivia’s servant. “A brother’s dead love, which she would keep fresh and lasting in her sad remembrance.” What Valentino means is that Olivia would rather keep her love clear for her brother rather than anyone else. This may prove to be a problem for Orsino as he loves her. He will now have to find another way to love her and make her change her mind or something of the sort to make his fantasy come true. This type of major obstacle in love can also be found in Romeo and Juliet. While Romeo and Juliet loved each other at first sight, they ran into numerous obstacles as well. One of which was their background. Romeo was a Montague, and Juliet was a Capulet. They were each part of two rival families whose feud made their marriage impossible. This not only increased the complicity of their will to be with each other, but their backgrounds made them unsuitable for each other as well.
