Owen Han Mr. Bernsen World History 2 Roman architectural Rome, the greatest ancient empire to ever rule the world is famous for its architecture, among other things, which greatly stands out. With the Roman' s great army constantly conquering other Countries, Romans took under consideration design principles of other cultures when developing their own buildings to give Rome the feeling of a great empire and make citizens feel proud of being part of it. Their basic architectural skills and ideas come from the Greeks and the Romans adapt them and further develop them. Roman architectural style continued to influence buildings in the former empire for many centuries. Many techniques that the Romans invented and perfected are still in use today and many ruins of Rome's great architectural advancement still exists today.
In ancient Rome, architecture and engineering were highly regarded. It contributed much to Rome’s development, power, as well as the longevity of such an immense and substantial empire. Architecture displayed an immense amount of workmanship as well as innovation. This is seen through Rome engineers as they created the concept of concrete, constructed the famous Roman aqueducts, and the luxurious Roman baths. Roman’s were clearly superior engineers compared to their competitors because Roman engineers developed new and innovative concepts that were never introduced before, therefore contributing to the success of the Roman Empire.

The Romans made advancements in almost every aspect of life including, "art, architecture and engineering, language and writing, and philosophy, law and citizenship," (Alavosus 15). Many people consider the achievements of the Romans in engineering to be the greatest legacy of the Roman Empire. Engineering flourished during this time because the Romans created tools and techniques that helped them be successful builders. They built thousands of miles of roads that included tunnels and bridges. Roman engineers developed tools for leveling, measuring, and aligning.
Roman Architecture Many centuries before the birth of Christ, the city of Rome grew, prospered, and developed into a thriving Republic. As in most cultures, Rome's buildings became more elaborate and impressive. They developed fantastic building technologies and ideas. The feats of Roman engineers were groundbreaking, and many structures built by this culture still stand today. With knowledge borrowed from the Greeks, Rome made impressive architectural achievements, these were namely major attributes of buildings, colossal structures, and a legacy that would influence later buildings (Cornell and Matthews 11).
These ideas and works are still being used today in our society in some of the most influential buildings of our time. The Romans were a very creative society that worked to build greater and more magnificent things than had ever been built before. The ancient Roman’s ideas on architecture gave us advancements like the arch, the dome, and magnificent road works while also creating great buildings the like the Aqueducts, the Colosseum, and the Pantheon. The Romans created many things when they were building the structures of their time period. One of the most important things they created was the arch.
Concrete also was the base of stone bridges across rivers, stacked aqueducts across valleys, and large sight-seeing buildings like the Pantheon in Rome, and later the Cathedral of S. Sophia in Constantinople. Those buildings used domed roofs to close in a great amount of space. Those types of buildings were leading in size than any other building until the 16th century. Another innovation in technology was the Roman roads. One can tell the Roman engineers were highly skilled because the roads ran miles.
Roman engineering and architecture stand out as some of the most marvelously sophisticated for the time, with the variety of structures they built and the means of construction. Roman architecture went through a golden age beginning in 27 B.C. and lasting until about 180 A.D. when the Empire began to decline. During this golden age, the Romans built coliseums, an intricate road network, aqueducts, and bathhouses. Many examples of these structures still stand today, a testament to Roman architecture genius.
Clearly states that Romans had applied comprehensive methods and guidelines in constructing new architectures. Because of this impeccable mentality, the Romans architectures have flourished to the modern world. Many countries in the world have based their public structures such as basilicas, libraries, universities, monuments, courthouses, and more. In order to understand how Roman architecture has influenced the modern world, we must first understand its history and innovations throughout the lifespan of its empire. We have already learned that the beginning of Rome’s originals foundations was a collaboration of designers and engineers from a variety of different cultures.
THESIS STATEMENT The Roman’s extensive use of concrete is portrayed through their massive architectural feats. PURPOSE STATEMENT Through the critical analysis of works dealing with the concrete of Ancient Rome it is evident that Rome used concrete to build massive structures. INTRODUCTION What would our world be like today if we did not have concrete? Could we imagine a life of stone built houses? The ancient people of world did just that.
