People of the Philippines have recently elected Rodrigo Duterte as their president. Duterte had a very outspoken campaign that focused heavily on ridding the country of corruption. His plans of eradicating this corruption may seem very unorthodox to many and even immoral to others. During his presidency, Duterte aims to abolish drugs at any cost, at the same time breaking ties with the US while strengthening relations with China. Rodrigo Duterte, who served seven terms as the mayor of a town called Davao City, had some success in reducing crime in what was previously known as the murder capital of the Philippines. These unofficial killings have caught the attention of two of the biggest human rights overseers, the United Nations as well as the Catholic Church. The two groups, as well as other human rights activists, have questioned the morality of the unlawful killings. One man by the name of Archbishop Socrates Villegas, who is the president of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines said “Are we providing our children a safe haven, by teaching them by our tolerance of murders, that killing suspected criminals without fair hearing is a morally acceptable way to eradicate crime? … From a generation of drug addicts shall we become a generation of street murderers” (Domonoske)? The Philippines is the third largest Catholic country in world trailing behind Mexico and Brazil.
