As young people’s civic and political participation continues to decline, a number of organizations are working to reverse the decline by increasing opportunities for youth to participate. Communities around the country are taking steps to engage young people through a variety of methods that allow youth to actually participate in policy development and take action on local issues. The effectiveness of such community programs on long-term civic engagement is not well documented, however. This paper presents preliminary research about the effectiveness of one community participation program, the Southern Nevada Water Authority’s Youth Advisory Council. Quantitative and anecdotal evidence, while not conclusive, suggest this community problem solving approach may encourage its participants to engage in other civic and political activities. The paper also discusses the benefits that organizations and communities receive when young people participate in this way, and provides recommendations for developing a similar youth participation program.

Every citizen wishes to have a country where there is transparency. A transparency - that shows the unity and equality among the law, the officials and, of course, for its people is what most of them desire; that can somehow lessen the problems in supporting the needs of others; that helps to broadcast the income and the expenditures of the country; that warns its people that they are living in a democratic country; a way for the nation’s citizens to see the activities of the elected officials; and, of course, a key that somehow lessen the corruption in the government. However, even this transparency is being practiced the saddest part is that, not all officials are aware of this. This is the reason why corruption in the Philippines is one of the major dilemmas that they are still facing.

Over the years, many names of the candidates in government elections, both national elections and local elections, have sounded familiar. During elections, well-known surnames are never gone. On the other hand, even though these politicians who seem to have “good” platforms during the campaign period and always tell, as redundant as this may sound, “iaahon ko ang Pilipinas sa kahirapan”, there are really no significant changes in our country during the previous years until now. The things the candidates have said just remain as broken promises. Therefore, political dynasty in the Philippines should be prohibited because it adversely affects the progress of our country.
