Hinduism is known as one of the oldest great religions. After Christianity and Islam, Hinduism is the third largest religion. There are nine hundred million followers, which is equivalent to fifteen percent of the world’s population. Most Hindus are known to live in India. Four out of every five people that live in India are Hindu. Prothero stated, “Hindus cannot even agree on what to call their religion, or whether it is a religion at all (Prothero, 134).” Hinduism leaves behind many questions regarding whether or not it is a religion as well as different views of Hindu practices. Four out of every five people that live in India are Hindu. Hinduism is known as the most governing religion in India. The root word “Hindu” is named after the Indus River. It refers to the people who live near the Indus River. Hinduism is known as a polytheistic religion; they believe in many gods or goddesses. Hindus do not have a specific founder or leader. Hinduism is known as a diverse and ever-lasting religion. In the early years of Hinduism, many of the people of India believed in reincarnation after death. Reincarnation is defined as after you have died you will be reborn and return to the world in a different form. The sacred scriptures of Hinduism is the Vedas. “In India, Hindus form the bulk of a rapidly industrializing economy that many predict will become the next China (Prothero, 133). The Shruti primarily refers to the Vedas which represent eternal truths revealed to ancient sages but some other Hindu individuals associated the Vedas with a God or a powerful person.
