There is a lot to learn about Hinduism and even other religions. Hindus ultimately believe in one god, Brahman. There are also other gods that are nevertheless apart of Brahman that people still worship. They also believe that fate directly influences people’s lives and they are controlled by a caste system that has recently not been as harsh or restrictive as it has been thousands of years ago. Hindus believe people are reincarnated after they die and continue this cycle of birth and rebirth until they can achieve Moksha.
The Bible is written more as a theological account rather than a historical record (Harris 281).With little to no additional resources to confirm Jesus’ existence and doings, it becomes almost impossible to confirm via modern methods what Christians believe as an absolute truth. JESUS THE ENIGMA - DETERMINING HIS TRUE THOUGHTS AND ACTIONS In trying to understand who Jesus was, what he did, and what he said, most people turn to the Bible for guidance and answers. Within the four Gospels of Mark, Matthew, Luke and John, one can find a vast amount of information to help with this quest. This information, however, can lead to confusion when one discovers the many disparities between each of the individual accounts presented in these gospels. Many times when a person reviews all of the gospels side by side, they find that they end up with more questions than answers regarding the type of person that Jesus really was.
Some of the Hindu scriptures are the Shruti and Smritis. The Shruti primarily refers to the Vedas which represent eternal truths revealed to ancient sages but some other Hindu individuals associated the Vedas with a God or a powerful person. The Smritis are all of the other text different than the Shruti. The most know of the Smritis are the Mahabharata and the Ramayana. Although the Hindus worship a large pantheon of Gods and Goddesses, they believe in the one Supreme Power that manifests itself in various forms.
They also called the land Hindustan and it’s inhabitants, Hindus. After that, the religion that followed was called Hinduism. Today, almost 800 million people practice the Hindu religion (Spodek, 261) More than a religion, Hinduism is a way of life and a philosophy that is most concerned with spirituality and enlightenment. The idealism of the Hindu religion comes from the Vedas, which are the Hindu religion's oldest scriptures and are considered to be a direct revelation of God. The Upanishads are writings that take their themes from the Vedas.
Systems of faith and religious practices have been a part of human society dating back 30,000 years ago during the Late Stone Age. Religion has been accepted as one of the cultural universals, which is a trait common to all human cultures worldwide throughout the history of humanity. While it is somewhat unclear exactly why the theory of religion has been formulated, it is clear that many societies have used a variety of religions as mediums to communicate and establish a general code of ethics to certain groups of people around the world. Two of these religions include Buddhism and Christianity. Both Buddhism and Christianity have implemented their doctrines into modern-day society and continue to influence different ethical views and values held by diverse cultures around the globe.
Also, after looking at so many different religions I do think there is a connection between religion and spirituality. I learned that a lot of religions believe in spirits and a spiritual world. Good examples of this are the Native American Religions and Vodun. They believe that these spirits guide them through life and protect them. But, I think spirituality can be applied to any religion.
Hinduism is known as the world's oldest religion. According to ISKCON Educational Services (2004), it is hard to construct a timeline because Hinduism has no identifiable human founder or specific origin in history. It is so old that its past goes into pre-history. It is extremely diverse with the Hindu people being more interested in the meaning of events than in providing first hand records. There is also no clear-cut divide between history and myth.
The major branches are Vaishnavism and Shaivism. These sects rely on their own set of scriptures but their focal point is the ancient Vedas. The philosophical Vedic texts, from the Aryans, involved the Upanishads in searching for knowledge on how the human beings would escape reincarnation. Hinduism has a cosmic principle Brahman, whereby they believe in rebirth after death. Hinduism emerged around the beginning of Common Era then coexisted within Buddhism for several centuries (Clearly, 2013).
Some would argue that Hinduism is not a religion but a way of life. Since no one knows who originated Hinduism and the word has been coined by foreigners, scholars believe that Hinduism been around circa 10000 B.C. Hinduism is One of the most complex of all living historical religion. Because of the flexibility of the religion allowed it to last so long, but amassed a bunch of contradictions.
