The Renaissance(Rebirth, French) was a time period after the fall of Rome in 476 A.D. Five hundred years before, the empire lost much of its literature, economy, and learning. After much time Europe began to rediscover literature and fine art. Spanning from the Fourteenth to Seventeenth centuries, it began in Italy, and spread through Europe. Scholars and Artists viewed the time between the fall of Rome and then as The Dark Ages, and Rome was “reborn” using their values and styles. This rebirth is also viewed as the light between modern day and the Dark Ages. The classical rebirth looked at ideas from art and literature from Rome and Greece, and also the rebirth of exploration. He became very renowned in Europe for his portraits, painting Philip II, Pope Paul III, Charles V and many other famous people of his time. However, his masterpiece and possibly most prized piece is Assumption of the Virgin. It is an oil on panel painting with dimensions of 270 inches by 140 inches, and took 3 years to complete. After the completion of this painting, he soon became the lead artist in Venice. This painting is an often used style, using 3 panels with 3 depictions. In the middle is the virgin Mary ascending into heaven. On the bottom is the apostles, and at the top is a depiction of god and the heavens, waiting to accept Mary into heaven. This was a widely renowned piece of art due to its large size, and the importance of religion in Europe. Another famous piece of Titian is The Worship of Venus. This piece was made in 1520, and took two years to complete. Its style is oil on canvas and dimensions are 68 inches by 69 inches. This painting depicts a Roman worship of the Goddess Venus, the Goddess of love, beauty, sexuality, fertility, prosperity, and victory. Nymphs were linked to Venus, and their children are the cupids that are plentiful in the painting. A third great work by Titian is The Flaying of Marsyas. This painting was completed in 1576 and made over the course of six years. It is also an oil on canvas painting and has the dimensions of 83 inches by 81 inches. In contrast to some of his other works, this piece is fairly dark. It shows the satyr Marsyas, being torn apart by men and beasts after a contest with the Greek god Apollo. It is the painted description of a story of Ovid, where Marsyas had challenged the god to a contest of playing reeds. Marsyas had lost, and Apollo had chosen a punishment of flaying, or tearing of the flesh from bone. This piece showed that Titian was indeed a master of painting, able to convey dark
