Every Tudor monarch sought marriage to foreigners in order to secure their dynasty. Both Henry VII and Henry VIII sought marriage alliances with Scotland. They both looked at marriage or the promise of marriage as a tool in which to obtain their goal. In 1503 the arranged marriage of Margaret Tudor, to James IV of Scotland secured peace between the two countries. The marriage meant that James IV's descendants would have a claim to the English throne and formalised the good relations with Scotland that had been made in 1497 with the Truce of Ayton however, this would not last as Henry VIII was keen for a marriage agreement marrying his son Edward to Mary Queen of Scots. Although she had given birth to many children, including several boys, only one girl had survived infancy. Henry went to Pope Clement VII asking for an annulment. Although Edward attempted to keep his sister’s out of the will (he did not want his Catholic oldest sister, Mary, to have control of the Protestant country he had inherited from his father) and appoint Jane Grey as heir. However Mary quickly declared herself queen at her manor Kenninghall on July 9, 15531. Jane’s feeble claim,passing over Mary, Elizabeth, Mary Stuart, and her mother, could have been declared Edward’s desire, however his council’s authority died along with him. Northumberland, the man behind Jane’s campaign, also did an about face at Cambridge, supporting Mary’s claim to the throne. This was due to his forces being wreaked by deserters. However Mary showed no mercy and he was executed in August as a traitor, along with Sir John Gates and Sir Thomas Palmer.

This left Henry the rightful heir to the English throne right before his 11th birthday. Fourteen months after Arthur’s death, Catherine of Aragon was betrothal to Henry VIII, and then he was too young to marry (5). As Henry VIII grew up his father became less willing to have an alliance with the Spanish and he repudiated the betrothal of Henry and Catherine (5). On June 28th, 1491, a boy was born in Greenwich Palace to Henry VII and Elizabeth of York. (Scarisbrick 1968) They named their son Henry VIII, after Henry VII. Henry was the second of the four sons that Elizabeth and Henry would have but he was the only one to survive to adulthood. His older brother was Arthur, and his two sisters were Margaret and Mary, and they would be the only ones who survived infancy. However, every ruler has a weakness, and Henry’s was women. In the tumultuous years of King Henry VIII’s reign, several controversies arose about his relationship with Anne Boleyn, his mistress and later Queen of England. Indeed, many rumors were whispered about Anne Boleyn’s manipulation of the King, which speculated that it was the cause of King Henry VIII’s separation from the Roman Catholic Church. It was also pointed to as the cause of the Act of Supremacy being catapulted, an act which effectively proclaimed Henry VIII’s as the head of the Church of England. Protestantism during that time was regarded as a church for heretics and because of that people perceived Anne Boleyn as an avid supporter (Pettegree). Many critics insisted that lust had driven the King to create the new church. However, historical evidence does not support these claims. Anne Boleyn, though described as calculating, captivating, vindictive, and assertive, was an insignificant influence on King Henry VIII, compared to his lust for power over the church, politics, and his incessant, unrelenting desire for a male heir.

In August 22, 1485, Henry changed all of that, during the battle of Bosworthfield Henry killed Richard and became king of England (Meyer, G.J. pg114). During the time of King Henry’s reign there was a war going on between two families, The York and The Lancaster family. This war was known as the War of the Roses and had gone on for centuries, but Henry changed that on January 18, 1486, Henry of the Lancaster family and Elizabeth of the York family got married, because of their marriage the war had ended and it brought peace to England once again. King Henry and Elizabeth ended up having four kids, Arthur, Margaret, Henry, and Mary. Only two of them became rulers of England.
