Every Tudor monarch sought marriage to foreigners in order to secure their dynasty. Both Henry VII and Henry VIII sought marriage alliances with Scotland. They both looked at marriage or the promise of marriage as a tool in which to obtain their goal. In 1503 the arranged marriage of Margaret Tudor, to James IV of Scotland secured peace between the two countries. The marriage meant that James IV's descendants would have a claim to the English throne and formalised the good relations with Scotland that had been made in 1497 with the Truce of Ayton however, this would not last as Henry VIII was keen for a marriage agreement marrying his son Edward to Mary Queen of Scots.
