Reflection on the Day: While I didn’t necessarily get to do a whole lot this time, I was able to learn a lot about the students and the IEP process, which I really enjoyed. The IEP was such a cool experience! I’m sure I’ll get to do many of those over the course of my career, but my first one was definitely good. The mom showed up and was very talkative, especially in regaling the story of her son skipping school on Friday. She and her husband (but it was more her) were not pleased and laid down the law the next day: the student had to get up early and work outside just like it was a school day, taking the same structure of a school day, and was only allowed to watch the MSU vs. UM game for a little bit. I was so proud of them! It was such a good thing and such a confidence booster to them. On the other hand, one of the students refused to say anything at all, even when he was called on. This is the same student who was really pushing the buttons of the student with an emotional impairment. After learning he had ADHD and reading a little about the symptoms in the book, his behavior that day made so much sense to me. His behavior was still stressful for me, because I didn’t know how to handle it, but at least I know why it was happening. Something that was a bit newer to me, too, was seeing the science test read aloud to the students. There were a few questions Amanda guided them through a little bit more, which was interesting to me. The students definitely benefited from it, and I think it was probably necessary for them to do well on the test. It just was a bit unexpected that she would do that. When pulling students, like during the science test, Amanda always walks around the classroom first to touch base and let them know that they are going to be pulled. It makes the situation less awkward for them, as they are not singled out that they need special help. Socially, middle school can be a very rough time, which is why Amanda does
