All of these things can be used in my future classes throughout my college career. This essay reflects on how my writing of English Composition essays has grown, or benefited from continuous revising, visiting the Writing Center, and implementing the feedback I have received from my instructor. The process of writing and revising of my first paper for English Composition 1 benefited from the various resources offered at the University of Oklahoma. Although I have learned a lot and have improved my writing skills tremendously I still feel that I have more to work on.
Even though we have a couple of weeks left on this course, I believe that I was able to accomplished my goal in this class to become a better writer, and write different types essays effectively such as descriptive, comparative and contrast, argumentative and research. Our first writing assignment was descriptive essay. I like the fact that we had a read around on our class. I had great opportunity to read my essay to the class entitled “My Sweet Little Princess.” I learned through our class discussion, that a descriptive essay simply describes something or someone by appealing to the reader’s senses: sight, sound, touch, smell and taste. Also, I learned that we have to use vivid details to make a person, place or experiences to become true to life which I failed to do, in which my professor commented on the side my paper.
Without being given specific guidelines, besides “write about a memorable experience involving reading or writing”, I was forced to use my own creativity to write a paper that met the limited requirements (I use the word limited very loosely). This first paper really helped me figure out my style and made and impact on my other papers that I wrote for this class. As I look back on my first semester of English at Tri-C, I can tell that I have grown in my writing ability. The changes that I have made will impact my writing style and techniques for the rest of my time in college and life.
Personally, I believe that I have gained valuable knowledge in my English classes. Recently, I am about to end my third English course of college and it has been a good experience, those courses helped and influenced a lot in my writing. I believe I did more than just improve my writing skills. I received some rhetorical and genre knowledge, and learned about the writing process and how to appropriately enter a conversation without losing my own style of writing. The first English course I took in college was a basic introduction to writing, during this course we learned how to write a good essay, we learned techniques to improve our writing and we learned how to organize our ideas and put them in a logical manner.
As the class discussed each student's essay map on the overhead, she asked students to critique the quality. Sometimes she scaffolded the critiques to bring awareness to the main grammatical problems. The Attention Theories, including Krashen's Monitor theory and Bialystock's explicit knowledge concept, were prevalent in this class because the grammatical rules such as parallelism in writing were directly taught. As each student's work was presented, it became easier for them to recognize similar mistakes because they knew what to look for. The thought process was emphasized in this writing class, and I think the explicit knowledge benefited most students.
Another advancement I noticed was that the content of my work has matured, along with my organizational adeptness. My assessment of my development in writing is based on comparison of essays I have written this semester and my reading responses from the textbook. One of my first reading and writing assignments was answering the Malcolm X questions. That wri... ... middle of paper ... ...enerate fresh ideas for my future expository essay. From this course I have learned that being a writer is much more than writing grammatically correct.

Now that we have discussed topics, texts, and in class writings lets wrap it all up.
Jared Lawrence 4/23/2014 College Writing 101-04 Critical Rationale Essay As I reflect on my experiences throughout the semester of English 101 I’ve come to figure out that I have met very important requirements that I feel were very valuable for me as a student. I have become a better writer; I have also learned valuable information on the proper rhetorical choices as well as understanding the materials we have went over throughout the semester. During this process, reading and comprehending the materials given were not only a difficult task for me but I also needed much improvement in this area. As far as my portfolio layout goes, I decided to use a layout which shows my gradual improvement as a writer throughout the entire semester. Other aspects of the writing process over the semester such as the revision stages were also something that I continued to progress in.
Throughout the semester I have learned an astounding amount of information. The English 101 curriculum has not only taught me how to write in general, but also taught me a variety of ways to get my point across to the reader. Before I took English 101 I was an average writer at best, but now that I am taking a class that focuses on writing strategies I feel that I have been able to improve as a writer. During the course we were taught how to write an informative essay as well as how to write a persuasive essay. The type of writing that this class has taught me will most definitely help me with future classes as well as my future in the real world.
I would like to start off with thanking you for having the time to review the work and effort that I have put into my English 101 Final Portfolio. In the time in class that I have had this quarter I have learned new techniques that I had not known before in writing, for example I have learned about how to build paragraphs in a correct formal way. In my work in the portfolio I hope to show how my skills as a writer have improved from the work I have done before. I plan to take the experience that I have had in this class and take it with me to help me improve as a student on other class topics. In the time that I have been in class I believe that it has helped me in a positive way to help me manage my time, along with building my confidence in writing.
