For this reflection, I would like to reflect on my first full day of solo teaching without my mentor in the room. My mentor went to an in-district training for three days and I was able to be her substitute. On my way to school, I was really nervous about what the first day on my own would be like and would everything run smoothly. I was pleasantly surprised how easy this day ended up being. First, I think that I set the day up well by discussing my expectations with the students and providing a calm environment for the classroom. I told the students that I had a goal for the day and that was to earn five class points. This ended up being incredibly motivating for them since they are getting close to a class party. I also provided a calm classroom environment. Some other teachers in the school have mentioned to me that the students take on your personality. So, I wanted that to be a calm and happy personality. This has happened to me a couple of times and I have always turned to Michelle to ask what I should do. Since she was not there, I wanted to be overly prepared so that the class would not turn into chaos! This turned out to be really helpful since I ended up running out of time for a couple of activities and we never had down time for the entire day. I now have one more day on my own this week as a substitute. For the next day I am planning a big science lesson that will include a lot of materials. I will overly prepare and stay calm because using all of these hands-on materials is always a lot of extra work and classroom management. Luckily, I will have the help of a para-educator for this lesson. For the rest of the day, I will start by setting up the day in a good and positive environment and also try to motivate them with points towards our classroom
In conclusion, my first impression was wrong, the classroom was not some kind of battlefield of teacher and student casualties. The students were not a lost cause that I imagine them to be. The students were well mannered and just wanted to be treated with respect. The classroom management was impeccable and astounding. It goes to show that although you may think you know a group of students you can be very mistaken.
This week, I followed up with the girls who went to the activity the District offered last Friday. We talked about their goals and the things they are doing in order to meet them. I emailed the lady who did the speech and we are trying to set up a second meeting, so the girls can talk to her again. This week, I had to deal with a lot of drama with another group of girls. I believe since it is April and the school year is almost over, they are under a lot of stress and that is the reason they keep getting in trouble. Last week, the student got their grades report, so I went over their grade and we worked on the grades they need to improve. It was so nice to be back at Discovery, for my third summer volunteering. It hadn’t felt like summer until I walked into the door and saw all the preschoolers. This year it was very different from the past 2 years because there were so many new kids and only about four from the last summer. The kids were all very excited to meet me and were very welcoming. It was nice to see some of the same teachers, but there were new teachers as well. All the kids came up to me to find out my name and to ask if I was a new teacher. I especially loved it when I introduced myself to one of the kids and he responded “Kalala, that’s a silly name”. It was amazing to watch the kids playing and learning and having the chance to watch how they interact with one another. They’re so nice
This week was very exciting in terms of my informational interviews and being able to work security at a music event. The informational interviews not only helped being the classroom to the real world but also provided me with real examples to better strengthen the connection. I also learned a lot in terms of dealing with the public in a busy environment and how to most successfully defuse a situation in which alcohol and attitudes are involved.
... The students seemed respectful and polite, for the most part, and I am anxious to get to know them and to assume an active role in class. If these had been my classes, I probably would have changed the Spanish I class completely. I would have greeted each student at the door saying, ¿Cómo te llamas? (What is your name?) and when he/she looked at me with a look of confusion explained to them what that meant and what the appropriate response would be, Me llamo (name). (I call myself _____.) I would have had the class practice this by asking each other and then giving the appropriate response. I would then have gone over the class rules and, if there was time, started to teach them the Spanish alphabet. I also would not have spent the whole class going over rules with the Spanish III students but rather would have tried to get them started on an activity.
I found the week as a whole a fun, new experience. It was great to meet new people that I may never would have met before joining this class. I am very gracious to have chosen to be a part of this great new experience. This first week allowed me to learn many new things that I did not know before about our friends. The week also showed me many new ways to play games and workout with the integration of dance. I learned how to do some yoga techniques, new stretches, and some new muscle strengthening exercises. The week also helped to improve my leadership skills and collaboration skills. The first week gave me a great first impression and through that impression, I can tell the rest of the semester will be just as great as the first week.

For example, if I am teaching something and everyone gets it wrong on a test I will have to re-evaluate myself and the way I am teaching. I may even have to find another way to teach it. I also have learned a trick that I will use with my students one day; to make side notes on what they missed and why they missed it. Sure it may take more time but some students have a fear of talking to teachers at first, so by doing this they won’t always need to talk to me, but if they feel that I am wrong with their grade they may have the courage to approach me. I really want to teach the students about the importance of keeping a planner too, not only because it helped me stay organized, but because of how much it helped me in general. I want the students to get the most out of my class.
As an adult learner who was formally an early elementary teacher, my least favorite time of year is the week before school starts back for the new school year. The first week of school is always a rush and a buzz of excitement and nerves. However, it is the week leading up to that first week, that for me, as an educator was a week I dreaded to see. I expected cming into the course to have more writing homework and an assignment due every day, but I 'm thankful we do not have to stress about that. We have only had two major papers, a couple reading responses and answering some questions in our daybook. The visual representation essay was different and made me really think about myself. From the assignments vie handed in so far, its taught me I need to spend more time on them and proofread them. I appreciate how we get a class period to discuss the next upcoming assignments and to do peer
My class feels like everything is being done just as I planned it. The students are having fun working on their assignments and talking with their classmates. All my students are doing their work, and I have no problem with misbehavior because it would be dealt with the first weeks of class. However, I realize this classroom that I am imagining might not exist, because there will be some days in which the students might decide to misbehave and not follow instructions, or will they will not want to do their work, but I will do my best to motivate these students to change their behavior and to give me his or her best effort.
I chose to do my teacher interview in my home town at Richard D. Crosby Elementary School. This K-3rd grade building is very new, it was built in 2010. It has 4 pods, one for each grade level and has a large discovery center in each pod. The school is very colorful, with each pod a different color so the children find it easy to go from area to area. I did my interview with Mrs. Doe, a special education teacher. Her room has a lot of materials for learning and is set up to have several work stations for group activities. Mrs. Doe shares her students with other special education teachers and also has a special education classroom aide. My research question is how does a teacher’s perspective on learning reflect theories and concepts in educational psychology? Mrs. Doe is faced with many challenges in her classroom, overcrowding, multi-cultural differences, learning disabilities, several students with low socioeconomic status and English language learners. There are many challenges for Mrs. Doe to deal with, but she has been teaching for 21 years and has a lot of experience. She started out as a regular classroom teacher, but switched to special education and has done so well that when she asked if she could return to the regular classroom setting, the Superintendent begged her to stay in the special education department because of her success.
There was a significant amount of knowledge given in this course, involving concepts that in our teaching career will be extremely important. From this course I have gained a significant amount of learning experiences. I had the pleasure learning about how the educational system has come to be what it is today and who were the important people in the creation of the public education, like Horace Mann. Watching the videos and reading the chapters required has opened my eyes more of how a teacher should respond to different situations involving a student, For example when we read the chapter on the laws that revolve around the educators and the students. This was yet another teamwork-reliant activity. We spent the afternoon scrubbing and rinsing teachers cars, operating as a team to conclude the task. We had to work quickly in order to avoid the soap drying, and leaving a mark. Therefore, communication was necessary and we had to stay alert to avoid it. I felt content knowing that by simply washing my teachers cars, I could slightly repay them for all the time on school, providing me with an education. I was working along side a great group of girls, which also attributed to enhancing the experience for me. It also made me really grateful for my friends. All in all, I felt that this lesson implementation was a good experience for me, I learned a lot from last semesters practicum, and feel more comfortable teaching the children while being observed and am able to manage the class much better, although I am still quite nervous, which is something that I will continue to work on.
The teachers were giving the students positive reinforcement throughout the day. In class we talked about how positive reinforcement helps the students to succeed in their classes. Another ah-ha moment was the environment of the classroom. The classroom had no windows at all. In class we talked about what kinds of things are distracting to students with ASD in classrooms and one of those things are the windows in classrooms. The third ah-ha moment was the parent sheets that the teacher and the school provide for the parents. In class we talked about how parent involvement is very important for the students with disabilities. The teacher fills out the parent involvement paper that lets the parents know how the child did in school this week and what their child needs to improve on. The students must give their paper to their parents to look at when they get home. The things that I had learned during my observation experience that I will use in the future for my classroom will be including student learning objectives in the classroom, using positive reinforcement, and get the parents more involved in their child’s education. I will go over with the students what the student learning objectives are in the beginning of class so the students will know what they will be doing and what they will be learning throughout the day.
