Reflection: My First Day Of A Teacher In The Classroom

For this reflection, I would like to reflect on my first full day of solo teaching without my mentor in the room. My mentor went to an in-district training for three days and I was able to be her substitute. On my way to school, I was really nervous about what the first day on my own would be like and would everything run smoothly. I was pleasantly surprised how easy this day ended up being. First, I think that I set the day up well by discussing my expectations with the students and providing a calm environment for the classroom. I told the students that I had a goal for the day and that was to earn five class points. This ended up being incredibly motivating for them since they are getting close to a class party. I also provided a calm classroom environment. Some other teachers in the school have mentioned to me that the students take on your personality. So, I wanted that to be a calm and happy personality. This has happened to me a couple of times and I have always turned to Michelle to ask what I should do. Since she was not there, I wanted to be overly prepared so that the class would not turn into chaos! This turned out to be really helpful since I ended up running out of time for a couple of activities and we never had down time for the entire day. I now have one more day on my own this week as a substitute. For the next day I am planning a big science lesson that will include a lot of materials. I will overly prepare and stay calm because using all of these hands-on materials is always a lot of extra work and classroom management. Luckily, I will have the help of a para-educator for this lesson. For the rest of the day, I will start by setting up the day in a good and positive environment and also try to motivate them with points towards our classroom
