Research Paper Over the past year there has been over a million pounds of trash and debris filling up our landfills. This trash and debris have been found all over the beaches and found in the water killing ocean life and killing our reefs. This problem can cause our ocean food supply to plummet. It can also affect our economy ultimately by affecting our tourism. I am interested in this issue because, living in Hawaii and going to beach everyday I see beautiful beaches being trashed. So I would like to do anything I can to help the beaches and prevent this from happening. People might ask what does Hawaii do with their trash. Trash is a statewide problem in Hawaii. A solution that can be done with the growth of landfills is shipping the trash from Hawaii to a place with more space away from here. Because space is limited and a valuable resource in Hawaii. A major solution to the decline landfill and the pollution is recycling. Recycling reduces the amount of trash about 20% and it reduces to pollution in many ways. Many of recyclable materials are not being recycled and are just being wasted by being thrown out to landfills. Recycling is so important to to ecosystem of Hawaii because recycling reduces the amount of plastic and other trash from getting on the beach or the ocean. So it protects animals that live in Hawaii and it protect ocean life and our reefs that are in Hawaii. Not only recycling is a benefit for animals but for trees because not only recycles plastic but they recycle paper. Recycling paper is good because without recycling paper then more and more trees must be cut down to make more paper. We in this world would not be able to survive without trees.Every ton of paper that is recycled 17 trees are saved. Way that we can keep from landfill runoff from leaking into the ocean is to reduce oil, grease, and metals from going into the ground and leaking into the storm drains. Another way we can reduce runoff from getting from the land to the ocean is to keep and clean septic tank and keep it from leaking especially if u live right by and water source that lead straight to the ocean. Almost 25% of trash we go through goes down the drain into the ocean. We can also keep landfills from leaking into the ocean is to keeps landfills into contained areas and keep landfills from overgrowth. Also a way to keep the overgrowth of landfills is shipping trash from Hawaii. About 200,000 pounds of trash is shipped out of Hawaii every
