Lorraine Hansberry, an American playwright and writer, was born on May 19, 1930. Hansberry was the first African American woman to write a play performed on Broadway. Hansberry is best known for writing the domestic drama Raisin in the Sun. Raisin in the Sun portrays critical elements of social and political issues by shining a light on problems that African American families have faced throughout history. One of the worst problems African American families face is racism. Through the story of Raisin in the Sun, the Younger family faces racism. The Younger family faces a racist man by the name of Mr. Lindner after Mama buys a house using Walter Sr.’s money from his passing. After Mama got the money from her husband’s passing, she bought a house and gave the rest of the money to Walter Jr. Mama gave Walter Jr. instructions on how the money needed to be used. Mama wanted half of the money to be given to Bennie for her college and the other half to be kept by Walter Jr. for good use. Walter Jr. went behind Mama’s back and used all the money she gave him to start the liquor store. After Willy Harris stole the money, Bennie was very upset with her brother because she no longer had money for college. Walter Jr. thought Bennie wanting to be a doctor was silly because she was a female and females should be nurses. “Who the hell told you to be a doctor? ‘Bout messing around with sick people- then go be a nurse like other women.” (Hansberry 38). Bennie wants to be different from other women and become a doctor instead of a nurse, because that is her dream. Raisin in the Sun, a story about a black family living in the 1950s and their struggle to follow their dreams in a time when African Americans fought for race, gender, and financial equality.
