Lorraine Hansberry, an American playwright and writer, was born on May 19, 1930. Hansberry was the first African American woman to write a play performed on Broadway. Hansberry is best known for writing the domestic drama Raisin in the Sun. Raisin in the Sun portrays critical elements of social and political issues by shining a light on problems that African American families have faced throughout history.
