In the play A Raisin in the Sun by Lorraine Hansberry, the story takes place in a small apartment in the Southside of Chicago during the 1950s. This also took place when the women’s feminism movement in America started. Many African-American people migrated from the South to many big cities like Chicago during this time. The younger family lives paycheck to paycheck and often have verbal fights with one another. Lorraine Hansberry brings together the pursuit and chase of dreams with the complexities of race, gender, and religion, showing how societal bias changed the shape and the aspirations and identities of the younger family. …show more content…

In Act 1 Scene 1, Ruth is talking with Mama about Big Walter and reminiscing about the man he was. Mama then mentions how much he loved his children and had dreams with Mama. And Lena tells Ruth about Big Walter always wanting his children “to have something–be something.” He even told her, “Seems like God didn't see fit to give the black man nothing but dreams – but he did give us children to make their dreams seem worthwhile” (45). Walter's frustration with the limitations and struggles black people face in society is high, particularly in achieving their dreams. Despite the challenges, Walter finds purpose in his family, especially his children, seeing them as a source of hope and motivation to pursue his dreams despite the odds stacked against him. It shows the relationship between dreams and family caused by racial struggle. Walter Lee is a working-class man in his mid-thirties who is held back by limited opportunities and by his family.
