Some people have big dreams and Walter in Raisin in the Sun has a huge dream. Walter angrily says “You see this liquor store I got in mind, cost $75,000” (Hansberry 18). This quote shows it is going to take work to accomplish and Walter and his family have barely got by and don't have much money. Walter simply can't afford it, and it is a very big dream to accomplish. In the book, A Raisin in the Sun, written by Lorraine Hansberry, there are a lot of themes but there is one theme that stands out. The major theme is to have a dream, each character has a dream in their own way but has different obstacles keeping them from accomplishing it. Walter's dream is to open a liquor store, he has dreamed about this for a long time. Walter's mom, Lena, hated the idea of a liquor store, and she got a $10,000 insurance check and refused to provide any funding for Walter to open a liquor store. Walter really wants his family to support his dreams, especially his wife Ruth. Walter is trying to get support, but every time he just gets rejected. Walter, very frustrated, says “See I’m trying to talk to you about myself and all you can say is eat them eggs and go to work” (Hansberry 19). Because of Ruth trying to make Walter eat his eggs, Walter gets so angry and throws his eggs across the room. This shows that Walter cannot achieve his dream because no one believes in him. When Ruth says “Eat your eggs” it symbolizes that Ruth doesn't care about Walter's dream, Walter wants her to support it so much but she just doesn't. Walter Younger is a man with a dream who is struggling to fulfill it because his family is poor and doesn't approve of it.
