Throughout the book “A Raisin In The Sun” the complex financial situations within the family are shown in each individual's dream. Every character's dream is bold and ultimately reasonable, but affected by stereotypes and oppressed ideals of their society. A person’s gender can influence an individual’s dreams, as shown through Lena “Mama” Younger and her hopes and expectations for her children, Walter Younger’s dream of being a successful man, and Beneatha Younger and her relentless pursuit of becoming a doctor. Throughout the play “A Raisin In The Sun,” Hansberry uses opposition to societal circumstances to represent the unapologetic attitude the Benetha’s relentlessness has towards her dream of becoming a doctor. Hansberry uses “Mama’s” status in her family hierarchy to display her role as an encourager. “Mama”expresses to Walter Lee that she wants him to have his heart's desire, and apologizes for making him feel discouraged, “I helped do it to you.i’ve been doing what the rest of the world has been doing to you”. Lena “Mama” attempted to protect her son, but instead she caught herself diminishing Walter's dream. She thrives to see her entire family happy and protect them, even when this means protecting them from themselves. Hansberry introduces the aspect of the new house in a substantial way that Lena “Mama attempts to make everyone’s dream happen in a singular change of scenery “It makes a difference in a man when he can walk on floors that belong to him”. Lenea “Mama” describes it as “a nice house” and she claims it as “ours”. Lena “Mama” is ensuring their future, and setting an example that it’s possible to accomplish dreams. Lena “Mama” having the status of the matriarch in her family establishes her dream of being a provider, if she shows her family that her dreams can be accomplished this can give them encouragement and a new hope for their
