In all cultures, people have certain things they believe to be correct, and in some cases they believe anything else is wrong. Sometimes this can be classified as racism. Racism is the most critical issue across all cultures because it leads to lack of acceptance and ethnic conflicts.
First, racism leads to a lack of acceptance of other cultures. In the short story “An Indian Father's Plea”, Wind-Wolf’s father is begging the teacher to accept his son’s different culture. The other students in Wind-Wolfs class make him feel as if he doesn’t belong. As a result, Wind-Wolf returning home in tears was a common thing. Wind-Wolf’s father tries to get him to do things to make him feel more accepted in his own culture such as powwows Wind-Wolf responds “... no because thats wierd.” If the people he interacts with in school made him feel accepted he wouldn’t try to push away his culture. Another example is in the short story “Funny in Farsi”, when the family moves to America, they don’t understand anything that’s happening around them so after Firoozeh and her mother go to school the students make fun of them because women aren’t educated. In examples such as the Civil War and the Arab-Israeli conflict one group of people refuse to accept another group of people. In the Arab-Israeli conflict, both groups want control of Jerusalem but the other group of people believe it is theirs and are willing to do almost anything to gain and keep control of it. By the two populations disagreeing it is affecting everyone in the region. Also, the American Civil War has similar qualities. The southerners believe that the Black people are not real people and don’t deserve rights like white people do. So they took them from their homes and enslaved them. When they did this the people in the north believed it was wrong which sparked the Civil War. This disagreement is still affecting people of both ethnicities today America
