The idea of Race wasn’t always how it is perceived today. In fact, the concept and idea of race are relatively new. In the early modern period, race was constructed based on culture and physical traits and was used to establish a power structure throughout society. Racism in the American West was like other places of the world because each region used race to establish the superiority of European people.

Racism was shown through laws restricting the rights of others, imprisoning, and even executing people. The first example we see of this is black codes. Black codes were put into place in the 17th century. They were developed to control the minority population . There were very strict rules for slave owners to follow these codes. If they were not being strict enough or enforcing these codes, there slaves could be taken away. The next example of Racism in the American West is Jim Crow Laws. These laws allowed for legal discrimination and separation of people based on the color of their skin . These laws allowed people to continue to treat blacks as secondary citizens even know they had been given their freedom. At the same time these laws were in place the rise of the Ku Klux Klan was also in full swing. A racist and atmosphere of discrimination allowed for an organization such as the Ku Klux Klan to rise and be openly accepted . In more recent history we can see an example of Racism with the Immigration act of 1924. This act banned Japanese from the U.S and developed a systematic imprisonment of Japanese in containment camps. This was in response to the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. Racism in the American West was very like other places around the globe. In Germany, the Nuremberg laws were a prime example of racism. The laws restricted people of Jewish descent from marrying, having sexual relations, and even flying the state flag . These laws limited and restricted people’s freedoms because of their religion and heritage. This is very like the discrimination based on skin color in the American West. In South Africa, The National Party’s Colour Policy was promoting segregation and separation similarly to the Jim Crow laws of the American west. Racism is not only a crime against humanity, but a daily burden that weighs down many shoulders. Racism has haunted America ever since the founding of the United States, and has eerily followed us to this very day. As an intimidating looking black man living in a country composed of mostly white people, Brent Staples is a classic victim of prejudice. The typical effect of racism on an African American man such as Staples, is a growing feeling of alienation and inferiority; the typical effect of racism on a white person is fear and a feeling of superiority. While Brent Staples could be seen as a victim of prejudice because of the discrimination he suffers, he claims that the victim and the perpetrator are both harmed in the vicious cycle that is racism. Staples employs his reader to recognize the value of his thesis through his stylistic use of anecdotes, repetition and the contrast of his characterization.
The Untied States of America was built on the exploitation of others and the expansion of foreign lands. Anglo-Saxon superiority and their successive impact on governing policies and strong domination throughout every social institution in the nation allowed discrimination to prevail. Scientific Racism reached new heights of justification towards slavery, the massive eradication of the Native people, colonialism and daily occurrences of unequal behaviors and treatments towards colored people. The strong presence of polygenesis helped spur along and justify racism; the idea that all non whites were groups of individuals who ultimately came from another type of species supporting the idea that Blacks, Natives and other colored people were not ‘real’ human beings. Traditions, legislation, domination and acceptance of such social norms allow racism to be principal whether it was apparent through slavery or hidden in new laws and policies to come. Every aspect of a colored person’s life was affected upon, Education, economic status, environmental location and political rights. Those who had the power within the court system followed the Anglo-Saxon ways, making any change difficult and time consuming to come across.

America and Race have a long and entangled history. The concept of Race, like America is a recent invention. Race is an idea constructed by society to further political and economic goals. Race was never just a matter of how you look, it's about how people assign meaning toward how you look. It is ironic that a nation that takes great pride in one the foundation “All men are created Equal” can at the same time portray the idea of Race in such a scale that would repress and kill so many people. In this essay I will address what necessitated the creation of the story of race in American history.

The most profound cases of racism in the “United” States of America have been felt by Native Americans, Asians, African Americans, Mexican Americans, and Muslims. The most prominent demonstration of racism in America had to be the slave codes that were in place in all states where slavery was practiced. In “From Slavery to Freedom: A History of African Americans,” John Hope Franklin went into detail on slave codes on pages 137-138, “…these laws varied from state to state, but most of them expressed the same viewpoint: that slaves are not people but property and that laws should…protect whites.” One law stated that those enslaved could not bear arms or strike a white person, even in self-defense, but when a white person killed a slave it wasn’t even considered murder. Africans had no standing in court, they couldn’t testify or be a party to a lawsuit and their marriages were not legally binding. Raping an African American woman by her master wasn’t considered a crime either. The slave codes were designed to oppress, persecute, and humiliate blacks by the hands of the whites. With the slave codes and the eventual Jim Crow laws and any oppressive laws and segregation practiced in America, the idea of blacks being inferior was stamped into the minds of any person living in the country. African Americans were treated as subpar, they weren’t considered human beings and to this day the same belief is held unto, although not nearly as outright or not as blatant as in the past centuries. Slavery in itself is a large example of how racism is and may always be embedded into American society; blacks had to fight to even be considered citizens, be able to vote, and be given basic human rights. Though many would deny the existence of racism, the sad truth is that racism may be an ever-present concept in American society.
