Moscow's official population is approximately 9 million. It is the center of government and plays an important role in the country's political, economical, cultural, scientific, and military activity. Moscow is first mentioned in history in 1147 A.D. as Prince Yuriy Dolgorukiy's hunting camp. Due to its strategic position on a north-south trade route from Rostov to Ryazan, Moscow was the center of trade and government in what eventually became the Russian Empire. In, Vladimir Putin’s life he wanted to do and see a lot of stuff. He wanted to be a pilot, a sailor, and an intelligence officer. Putin only did one of these things which was been an intelligence officer. When, Putin tried to get a job as an intelligence officer he found out that he had to have a degree in law. It was only in 1970 that Putin was admitted to law department school. After, he finished school he went and tried to get a job working in the States Security Agency. After, about a half year later he was sent to operations personnel retraining courses. After, about 25 to 30 years later Putin was elected as acting president. Russia used to be called the United Soviet Socialist Republic (U.S.S.R.) or the Soviet Union. It was once a communist country that controlled many other countries in eastern Europe and western Asia. Communist leaders paid little attention to pollution and smog so Russia is taking steps to solve these problems. Now, Russia claims it is a democratic country with a government that has allowed free market changes in the economy.
