Session one began with me getting to know Jenna. However, this is not my regular student so I had to follow in the footsteps of the future teacher who was paired up with her. However I was able to give her my getting to know you activity as well has an informal assessment in order to gather an understanding of what math level she was at. After she answered questions from both the other future educator as well as my getting to know you activity, we began working on both of our pre assessments with her. It quickly became apparent that her biggest struggle was when it came to fractions. Every fraction question she had left unanswered. For the lead teacher interview assignment, I had the opportunity to sit down with and interview my son’s EC teacher from last year, Mrs. Hamm. Since my son started at the school last year, Mrs. Hamm has helped him in so many different ways. Mrs. Hamm has been teaching for over 20 years from her home state of Pennsylvania and more currently at Mount Energy Elementary School in Creedmoor, NC. Mrs. Hamm has been teaching at Mount Energy Elementary School in Creedmoor, NC for the last 12 years and recently awarded “Teacher of the Year”. Mrs. Hamm, up until this school year, was the main EC teacher for all grades Kindergarten through fifth grade at Mount Energy Elementary School. As of the present school year, the school district made the determination that she was over the acceptable number of students. As a result, they decided to hire an additional EC teacher and assistant to teach grades 3-5th and Mrs. Hamm would teach grades K-2. Mrs. Hamm was the teacher of 18 students until this decision was made, now with grades K-2, she has 9 students in her class.
Techniques for Establishing Rapport: Braelynn is my coach’s daughter, so I have gotten to know her pretty well over the last three years. Before administering the TEMA-3, we spent some time together outside, just talking about how her week has gone. While discussing everything from her softball practice to what I had for supper, Braelynn and I shared a lot of laughs, which strengthened our relationship and helped both of us to be more relaxed. Once again, before beginning the test, I described the test format to her, as well as the purpose of it.
For my paper, I interviewed my younger sister who is in Kindergarten. I entered the interview assuming that she would know more than she actually did. We started with the easier questions (we used addition and subtraction). The first question I asked basically just to explain to her how the interview was going to work, because sometimes explaining things to a 6 year old is hard to do without a visual. She actually answered the first one right, and we were off to a great start! I asked her: If Maya has 100 jellybeans, and her sister gives her 25 more, than how many jellybeans does Maya have altogether? She recognized that she had two separate groups (100 and 25), but when you put the two groups together you had the whole, or the answer (125).
Our year 11 contemporary dance assessment for semester 1 consisted of dance exercises taught by Rachel. Due to a dance injury I sustained 14 weeks ago I was unable to participate in the assessment but, instead was asked to asses my peers and write corrections and strengths they demonstrated throughout the class.
Based on this she can structure a learning environment that addresses a variety of learning styles, interests and abilities . Then we start talking about how Mr. Kennedy grew up she grew up as an only child she only had her mother in her life because her dad was always moving because he was in the army. As she grew up she was determined to become a teacher because she loves to help students. Now Ms.Kennedy has 2 she hopes they can follow there dreams and never give up this is what she expects from her students to never give up and follow their dreams. Throughout the course of the lesson, it may take multiple sessions before the student is ready to independently practice the skills learned. Anticipated lesson duration is included with each lesson plan provided in this instructional unit. Madeline Hunter’s Seven Steps of Instruction includes stating the objectives, anticipatory set, teacher input, modeling, checking for understanding, guided practice, and independent practice (Hunter, 2004). For the purpose of this instructional unit, input and modeling have been condensed into a streamlined event; as well has, checking for understanding and guided practice. This form of lesson planning is preferred within the Elkin City Schools district and lends itself to the creation of engaging lessons.
For Doman 1, planning and preparation, I believe that I demonstrate adequate skills. I work hard to make connections to my content knowledge with other subject areas through discussions with general education teachers for social studies and science curriculums (Danielson, 1996). As a special education teacher, I must have a full understanding of my students (Danielson, 1996). I design lessons that are the instructional match for my students, modify grade level curriculum, and accommodate for different learning styles. I also try to choose books that would be interesting to my students and create math story problems around the activities that students participate in. Assessing student learning is critical to monitor instruction and to report student progress accurately (Danielson, 1996). The stimulations were really eye opening. I was able to see through the eyes of a child with a learning disability in different areas. I always understood that children who have learning disabilities learned differently, but I didn’t imagine how extreme the difference could be. The problems were hard for me and became frustrating. I now know firsthand how frustrating it can be for students who have learning disabilities in different areas. It’s amazing what extra time or shorter questions can do to help increase understanding. I realize that some things that come naturally to me may be extremely difficult for someone who learns differently. As a new teacher, I will make sure to teach children strategies and develop assignments that increase student understanding.
My experience as the facilitator was at first never racking and hard to deal with. Therefore, my underlying goal was to focus on the here and now and how I would be able to utilize what I have learned in class. When we recorded the video in our class with Brittney we talk about the circle of casualty. In other words I was able to properly identify the patterns in her behavior when communicating with her husband, and how both fall into the same patterns and caused there to be and endless circle. Furthermore, I was able to use some of the language we talk about in class. For example “What I am picking up on is? “, “Is that correct?” and so for. By doing this she was able to provide me with a more in depth response to her conflicts.
This student is a difficult read and is difficult to build rapport with. Since she is so shy, she does not come forth with conversation and therefore, I know her the least out of my students. I attribute some of this to her age, demeanor, lack of confidence, and shyness. Even when I have the student one-on-one, I have to pry for information about school or casual conversation. There are other times when she catches me off guard and is very talkative, but only about topics she is willing to discuss.
