Psychology is a subject that has and continues to fascinate me throughout my life. To be able to understand how the mind works would be an invaluable experience for me as it is something in which I have always had a passion for. I have first hand experience with helping people through their issues by trying to envision their personal perspective of the problem and then suggesting possible strategies to overcome these issues, as well as giving advice. During my academic life, I have developed a strong interest in science especially biology. Over time human biology has fascinated me the most which sparked interest in topics such as neuroscience, criminology and psychopathology. In order to expand upon my knowledge on the subject of psychology, …show more content…
This placement expanded my knowledge of biology, working in a laboratory and the work environment. The time I spent here also provided me with enhanced leadership skills, trustworthiness, behaviour focus and key aspects of management in the work place. I took part in Buddy Reading during my short time at Sixth Form; where I was able to help younger students improve their reading skills and boost their confidence. I find that this experience has developed my communication and listening skills, this will be beneficial to me in my Psychology course as I would have no difficulty participating in a one-to-one conversation with someone. I also participated in a 6th form Strawberry Tea Party for Breast Cancer Research, as well as part of the Welsh Baccalaureate. I completed the Bronze Duke of Edinburgh expedition, showing I have a variety of skills in many areas and that I have the motivation required to complete tasks both mentally and physically demanding. These demonstrate my commitment, dedication and enthusiasm towards my interests. I have many different hobbies including singing and music, swimming, socialising with my friends and family, watching television, reading and

Whoosh!A bed whizzed by, surrounded by about 6 medical personnel. “What’s going on?” I thought immediately with apprehension. I knew whatever was happening it was not ideal. Ensuring I was not in the way, I stood on my toes to see what demanded so much attention. To my astonishment, I saw a coin sized hot-pink little girl. She could not have been bigger than two quarters lying side by side. She was struggling! Even with all the procedures the doctors were executing to save her life, she was performing the most work.

My paper is based on an article from the text’s web site (chapter 9) entitled “Lack of sleep ages body’s systems.” The basic claim of the article is that sleep deprivation has various harmful effects on the body. The reported effects include decreased ability to metabolize glucose (similar to what occurs in diabetes) and increased levels of cortisol (a stress hormone involved in memory and regulation of blood sugar levels). The article also briefly alludes (in the quote at the bottom of page 1) to unspecified changes in brain and immune functioning with sleep deprivation.
Since the beginning of my academic endeavors, I have long cherished a dream to be a member of the social science research community, which gives our society progressive insights into human ecology. I began my undergraduate studies at Ramapo College of New Jersey with a passion for ecological justice and with the intention of majoring in environmental studies. Ramapo College’s progressive liberal arts foundation provided me with ample room to explore the multifarious array of social science courses. As I took more social science courses, however, my understanding of human social groups underwent a metamorphosis. As a result, I decided to pursue a degree in Social Science, with minors in the two fields I felt most passionately interested in, Women’s Studies and African American Studies.

Every now and then when I recall my childhood memories, it is always been my parents took me to the hospital in the middle of the night or tried to find the right doctor for my allergies. Others could just take some medication and rest for few days for common cold, but my story is totally different. A common cold could cause me allergies, asthma and fever when I was young. It is the reason why I spent most of my time seeing the doctor and stayed at hospital. At the age of 10, my parents decided to have me switched to oriental medicine and acupuncture. Although I hated the taste of the Chinese medicine and was really afraid of the needle, those methods really helped my body. I was able to act like normal child after few years of acupuncture and oriental medicine treatment. It is why I always wrote about how I want to become a good doctor whenever I had to write essays in middle school.

Psychology is the investigation of the mind and how it processes and directs our thoughts, actions and conceptions. However, in 1879 Wilhelm Wundt opened the first psychology laboratory at the University of Leipzig in Germany. Nevertheless, the origins of psychology go all the way back thousands of years starting with the early Greeks. This foundation is closely connected to biology and philosophy; and especially the subfields of physiology which is the study of the roles of living things and epistemology, which is the study of comprehension and how we understand what we have learned. The connection to physiology and epistemology is often viewed as psychology, which is the hybrid offspring of those two fields of investigation.
Individual psychology was discovered by Alfred Adler who named his theory as such to emphasize the holistic perspective.
