Following the Protestant Reformation, a time of upheaval towards to practices of the Catholic Church, arouse a counter-reformation to the Protestants, known as the Catholic Reformation. As a result of growing uprisings against the Church’s corrupt ways, the Church was suffering from many problems and leadership issues. To put an end to these numerous complications, Pope Paul III called a council, held in the city of Trent. During the Council of Trent, some principal decisions and changes that were addressed involve the selling of indulgences, the teachings of the Catholic Faith, and dealing with the growing reformers. First, the council touched upon what would be done to solve the problem of indulgences. On of the major issues that the Protestant Reformers recognized with the Catholic Church was that it was selling indulgences. For example, the Church proposed that all of a person’s sins, and furthermore their dead family member’s sins, would be forgiven if they were to fight in the Crusades or give the Church a large load of money. As displayed in the previous decisions involving indulgences and the practices of the Catholic Faith, the Church decided to stand strong and not allow the Protestant Reformers to change the Catholic Faith. Basically, they told them to “Go to Hell!” and went on with their ways, only this time showing their confidence and power. Baroque art appeared in an effort to show that the Church had won and would not give in. The art was bolder and bigger than anything ever before. There were huge, colorful stained glass windows that could educate priests and even uneducated peasants about the Church’s teachings.
