Prostitution, the performance of sexual acts for compensation, is linked to a number of social problems such as violence, drug use, transmission of sexually transmitted infections and mental health issues (Stebbins, 2010). Many of these women are involved in sex work out of desperation or they are forced into the occupation (Stebbins, 2010). While there are a number of reasons why many women enter prostitution, most have a troubled past and histories of sexual, emotional and physical abuse (Stebbins, 2010). The reality for many of these women is the continuation of violence and abuse, drugs and a difficult cycle to get out of (Long, Mollen & Smith, 2012).
