Throughout the years, and with technology advancing so quickly, it's pretty safe to say steroids have come a long way from where they started. Dating back to the original olympic games, athletes were known for ingesting animal testicles before competitions for bettering their performances. While this doesn't happen today, many athletes still do use anabolic steroids for enhancing their game, just in a much more humane way. Even though steroids are mostly known for their misuse in sports competitions, they also have many other beneficial uses as well, like treating a variety of inflammatory diseases, transitioning transgender people, arthritis, asthma, skin conditions and even some forms of cancer.

In 1931 a German chemist named Adolf Butenandt, was the next scientist to continue the work, by taking urine samples and extracting an anabolic steroid called androstenone. He was able to work with another chemist by the name of Leopold Ruzicka, and together, they finally created a synthesized anabolic steroid from male sex hormone, testosterone, that was safe for human use. Due to their extraordinary accomplishments, they were awarded the 1939 Nobel Peace Prize and honoured for their achievements. Some other common side effects are, hair loss, oily skin and oily hair, mood swings, swollen cheeks, and some more advanced side effects would be heart disease, meaning heart attack or stroke, and liver disease. For some bodybuilders, steroids are the way they achieve their famous built look. They strive for that look and when they achieve it, they don’t know when to stop taking it. If they stop using the anabolic steroids, the fear of losing their muscles may overcome them, so they carry on and continue taking them. Many body-builders worldwide are addicted to steroids and need their daily fix. This can be a major concern because as people age and continue to take the drug, the effects of long term use are serious; damage to the gonads (testicles or ovaries), ‘roid rage’ which consists of major outbursts of uncontrollable aggression, paranoia, depression, high blood cholesterol, high blood pressure, delusional feelings of being superhuman or invincible, and can stunt growth in adolescents. While many of its users, don't wish to stop, there are also many users who have stopped and have come forward about their struggles. In baseball, it has been known for many athletes to use steroids at least once throughout their careers and then deny it when caught. Unlike a man by the name of Nate Penn.
