The Controversies of the Game

“Performance-enhancing drugs are an illusion. I wish I had never gotten involved with steroids.

It was wrong. It was stupid,” quoted by Mark McGwire, one of the most controversial players in the

history of the game. Of course baseball fans and players will remember the 1998 historic season when

he hit an unprecedented 70 home runs that season. Of course nobody hits 70 homers without doing

something to his body and he did enhance his body using steroids, the most controversial drug in

baseball. The game has changed since then and has adjusted to these controversies due to PED 's and the

way they have been handled, the drug and alcohol abuse, and the strikes that have plagued baseball.

The 1919 Black Sox scandal is the most infamous in baseball history, let 's call it then, in the

history of sports, the Black Sox scandal is the most infamous in all of sports history. The Pete Rose

scandal was also one of the biggest in baseball. Pete Rose bet on baseball and was banished for life.

Three times Rose applied for reinstatement and three times he was denied. Now through all the

controversy of today 's game, the reinstatement of Rose is a subject widely talked about. Other scandals

include the “Pittsburgh Problem(Baseball Almanac),” a grand jury that included Pittsburgh Pirates and

other MLB players regarding the drug users This happened right before the Pirates became the “family”

they were known for. The cocaine scandal ended with the Oded deaths of many MLB players

including Rod Scurry, John Milner, and Kevin Koch. Ironically, these players were involved in the

previously mentioned “Pittsburgh Problem.” The biogenesis scandal in 2013 accused 20 MLB players

of using HGH, a steroid, including Ryan Braun, 65-game ban, and Alex Rodriguez, 2014-season ban.

Scandals have helped baseball become what it is today.

(Chass, 1989) For the first 15 years of his indefinite suspension Rose would vehemently denied any and every accusation of him having ever bet on baseball, only to finally admit to having done so in his 2004 autobiography My Prison Without Bars. (Dodd, 2004) Pete Rose will not be able to enter the Baseball Hall of Fame until his indefinite suspension ends because the Executive Committee that runs the hall of fame prevents suspended players from appearing on ballots that are sent to the voters at the Baseball Writers Association.
