Anabolic Steroids or simply put, “Steroids”, is a medicine which has become increasingly popular in the last few decades, specifically in the world of professional sports and body building. In a literal term, the word anabolic means building of the body muscle and by using anabolic steroids, the potential user becomes stronger, sharper, larger and tougher than he would normally be. The consequences of these steroids could be much bigger to a human body and the usage of such illegal products could put an individual’s body at great risk (Haupt & Rovere, 1983).
Non-medical use of anabolic steroids is illegal and banned by most, if not all, professional, intercollegiate, and interscholastic sports organizations. No matter what justifications are given for using steroids, one cannot overlook the fact anabolic steroids can cause serious physical and psychological side effects. So what exactly is this substance that appears in the headlines of our newspaper?s sport section? Anabolic steroids ?are the synthetic derivatives of the naturally occurring male anabolic hormone testosterone? (Wadler 1). Testosterone?s natural effects help a boy going through puberty grow hair, develop a deeper voice, and retain dietary protein, which aids in the development of muscles. Athletes take the drugs ?to primarily increase muscle mass and strength? (Wadler 2). Steroids do not, however, improve agility, skill, or cardiovascular capacity. Steroids can be taken orally or they can be injected. Most recently, the steroid of choice has been the kind that is injected and is short-lasting and water-soluble. Many steroids that come in the oral form have proven to be hazardous to the liver, but as Dr. Wadler explains, ?injectable steroids aren?t free of side-effects either. There is no free ride and there is a price to be paid with either form.? Some effects in men of frequent ...
While some athletes will argue that steroids give them an extra edge against their competition, many studies have shown that the risks of steroid use deeply outweigh the benefits, especially in adolescents. Anabolic and androgenic steroids, which are the most commonly used, have adverse effects on the entire body. The most harmful of these effects are damages to the brain. When injected or taken orally, steroids have dangerous mental effects, such as extreme mood swings, violence, steroid withdrawal, and depression leading to suicide (National Institute on Drug Abuse). This is more intensified in adolescents ("Dangers of steroid abuse for teenage boys"). These mental effects would not only impair their body but would hurt their personal life and relationships with others. These negative effects are not worth the extra "edge" an athlete receives from steroids.
Given all the negative side effects associated with steroid use, it seems bizarre that healthy teens and adults would want to risk their health. However, most people are inclined to deny their mortality and take risks to reach whatever performance or physical goal they are attempting to obtain. A few reasons why an athlete may resort to taking anabolic steroids would be: most athletes reach a plateau at some point in their training and steroids may help move them beyond it; athletes make numerous sacrifices to pursue their sport and when their effort doesn't yield to their desired results, they become desperate enough to take them; there are also athletes whom are making good progress with...
The use of anabolic androgenic steroids (AAS) dates back as early as the 1950’s and 1960’s. During this era, the importance of winning and accomplishing other feats among athletes seemed to skyrocket as compared to the previous years of sporting events. According to Darkes , “athletes who use steroids choose to do so mainly for the physical benefits so closely associated with steroids use – bulking up, increased muscle mass and the ability to train longer and harder.” Due to the increase in training, strength gains, recovery periods, etc., athletes were and are able to take their athletic abilities to levels which exceed those of their peers. In this “win at all cost” period, it is seemingly acceptable that some athletes use steroids to triumph obstacles while ignoring the side effects that go along with its usage. Not to mention, young teens and even adults see some of their sports heroes on news and tabloid articles everyday in speculations involving steroids. The result tends to influence athletes in a way in which they perceive and link steroid usage with athletic excellence. However, one of the more controversial issues being questioned in this day and age is how steroids affect the psychological aspects of the users. Within this field of study, many areas of questions arise. Does it lead to “roid rage”? What is the linking factor which gives these users more confidence in their sporting events? How can it lead to anxiety and depression? What is the result when the athlete stops dosage? Modern research is helping explain certain inquiries that involve steroids and their effects. The results vary in instances but are very knowledgeable in gaining insight in which many people, fans, and athletes call the “Steroid Er...
Once viewed as a problem only associated with professional athletes, recent reports estimate that 5 to 12 percent of male high school students and 1 percent of female students have used anabolic steroids by the time they were seniors. The athletes using these drugs don?t belong to one particular sport, these users play sports ranging from girls tennis all the way to boys swimming all of which have the same goal in common, to gain the upper hand. They are usually used during training to build muscles and contrary to popular belief are not usually used when the athlete is competing...
A plethora of arguments are raised by the opponents of steroid usage, with the strongest one being about the harmful affect that these steroids have upon the human body. It is argued that ...
Anabolic steroids, when combined with vigorous physical training, do enhance athletic performance by making users bigger, stronger, and faster—while also speeding up their recovery time after strenuous exercise. If steroids effectively enhance performance, what is wrong with allowing athletes to take advantage of modern medicine and pharmacology? After all, athletes frequently are given painkillers and are fitted with artificial devices designed to enable continued participation in a sport despite injury. (Mitten par.6)

There are many reasons given as to why people decide to take steroids. Despite all the negative effects it can have, some people actually need it as their doctors prescribe it to them due to health reasons. For instance, anabolic steroids can be prescribed to treat conditions resulting from not having enough testosterone in the body such as delayed growth and puberty. It can also be prescribed to treat conditions such as loss of muscle mass from diseases like cancer and AIDS.(DrugFacts: Anabolic Steroids) Unfortunately, there are also many people , especially athletes, who inject themselves with steroids illegally, without a prescription from a doctor, in order to enhance their performance in sports and in appearance by increasing their muscle mass. However, what many of these people don’t realize or just simply ignore is that there are many side effects to steroids and that the negatives heavily outweigh the positives.
